Chapter 40: tattoos and pain

Althea scratches her left wrist, the irritated skin under the bandage giving her hell.

“Stop scratching it,” orders Harley moving her hand forcefully. “If you keep scratching, it will get infected.” The blonde looks at the cook straight in the eye and keeps on scratching. “It doesn’t matter how much you scratch it, the tattoo won’t vanish.”

Deaf to the truth, Althea keeps attacking the skin of her wrist over the bandage, the letters under it burning her every cell.

It has been three days since she was tattooed in Diaz’s office. The whole process had gone smoothly. After she had drawn what she wanted on a piece of paper, the tattoo artist got to work, efficiently engraving Althea’s chest with the only word she was sure would keep her going:

Never mind

After the night before with Diaz and his dagger, the pain of a needle breaking her skin felt like nothing to Althea, merely another day.
