Cain wakes just as I step through the veil with a pot and a bag of potatoes in hand.

World walking is easier than it seems, though each time I do it, I'm scared I might end up where I don't want to.

I have stepped into the human cities for some pepper, though the store was closed and I had to take it without paying. I didn’t have the money for it anyway.

“So you just took it?

Cain’s groggy voice is soft in my head and the whistling wind around us whips my hair every which way. I frown at the light judgment in his tone but he smiles and tries to get up so he can help me. The deer is still there, slain, unalive, not breathing, and for a minute I feel a twinge of regret at the fact that we killed it. But we have to eat and this is the only thing to eat.

“Can you help me lug some of these things back to the cave Mister? The storm’s coming in fast.”

Cain nods and gets up, still blinking away exhaustion and still having that streak of dried blood now caked to his face.
