What do you think of Xander talking to Meadow as if he's Maeve?
I wake up the next morning, shocked that I slept so well. It’s been a long time since I haven’t woken up listening for someone to bang on my door in the middle of the night or try to break in to get us. At first when I wake, I’m completely disoriented. It takes me a moment to remember everything that happened yesterday. Has it really only been one day? I can’t believe that less than 24 hours ago, I was putting Meadow and Tate on a bus. It feels like I lived a week in the last day. I get up, not knowing what to expect today. I’m guessing that I won’t be allowed to return home until I make the potion that breaks the spell. That will be a week. It’s a touchy spell, one that I have to slowly maneuver to work around the spell that Gwen wanted. I can do it, it will just take some time and a lot of subtly. I’ve just gotten out of the shower when there’s a knock at the door. I wrap a towel around my hair, piling it on top of my head and then around my body, not sure if I have clean clothes
It was a risk showing Maeve that I’d talked to her sister, but I also need her to start trusting me. I didn’t say or do anything that would upset Maeve, I don’t think. But, it’s still a risk. She zeros in on the one thing that I said that I knew she wouldn’t have, that they’d be together again soon. “I can’t bring them back here, Xander. I can’t keep them safe.” “The pack will keep them safe, Maeve.” “Xander, I’m a witch, my sister is a witch. There’s no way your brother is going to allow us to stay on his pack lands.” “I know you haven’t had a good experience with wolves, Maeve. But protection is what we do. We’re good at it.” “Well, it doesn’t matter. I have to be here for a week anyway to make sure the potion cures. After that, I’ll be out of your hair, and you won’t have to worry about me or my siblings ever again.” She says before digging into her breakfast. “M is scared, Maeve. She needs to feel safe. Tate needs to feel safe. They’re alone and they are juveniles. They…” “
I have no idea where Xander is taking me, but I’ll pretty much go anywhere if it means talking to Meadow. However, when we show up at his parents’ house, I nearly make a run for it. I’ve already had to face Xander, his brother, the current Alpha, and his sister. Now, I’m going to meet one of the original Guardians and one of the strongest Alphas that has ever lived? Yeah, not high on my to-do list. Xander’s mother’s name suits her, Angel. She has long, straight white-blond hair. She’s short, shorter than me, making her nearly a foot shorter than Xander, with grey eyes. She has a kind face and shrewd eyes. Those shrewd eyes are currently focused on me. “Come in. Both of you.” She says, stepping back. Xander puts his hand on my back, urging me to enter in front of him. I pull on years of strength that I developed dealing with werewolves and I walk inside. I refuse to show fear. I can hear the chatter of female voices coming from the living room. They sound happy. It makes my heart
I have never challenged my father before. I never had a reason to before today. He realizes instantly that she’s my mate, but he’s still willing to condemn her for something she had no control over. It’s Maeve who is able to diffuse the situation by using my mother’s Guardian gift. She doesn’t seem to know that my father has it too, since he’s her mate. After she tells her story, I know my mother well enough to know that she will want to look after her. I want it to be me, but I know, as soon as Maeve breaks down, that my mother can help her in a way that I can’t right now. Einar begins fighting against me, knowing that Maeve is more open with him than with me. He wants to care for her, be there for her and I have to fight him back. Once again, it’s Maeve that calms the situation by telling Einar that she’s okay. When they walk away, Reagan surprises both of us by scolding my father. Apparently my sisters are feeling protective of my mate. I like that. My father watches them leav
Alpha Liam told me that he was going to go to my shop and find the scent of the Whitmore brothers. He also told me that he wants me to consider bringing my brother and sister into the pack. He swore that he would protect them. While I want to believe him, I’m hesitant. My experience with the wolves up until now hasn't exactly been good. One good thing came out of that meeting though. Alpha Liam snarled at Xander for keeping my phone. “Give it back to her, Alexander. It’s her only connection to her family.” When we’d gotten back to the packhouse, I’d gone to the spell room, as Xander calls it, and he’d gone to get my phone. As soon as I was done with the spell, I raced to my room and called Meadow. They had just arrived in Montana. “Oh, Maeve, it’s gorgeous here. You definitely should join us when you can.” “How are you feeling today? Better?” “Yes, much. I’m sure it was all my imagination.” “Well, don’t become complacent. Stay alert, just in case.” “We will.” “Have you found a
I need to figure out what it is about my mother and sisters that gets Maeve to agree to spend time with them. I’ve been trying for days to get her to agree to spend time with me and she keeps pushing me away. It’s making me crazy. Einar is constantly on edge, always pacing around in my head. It’s gotten so bad, I can’t even focus on my schoolwork. So, when I catch them heading outside, I take the chance that she’ll at least spend time with Einar. He finally relaxes a bit when she agrees. We stop in her spell room. I’ve only been coming here because it’s practically the only way I can spend time with her. Although the smell has gotten easier to take over time, it still stinks. When we walk in, my sisters cover their nose immediately. “Phew, what’s that smell?” Quinn asks. Maeve looks at them, frowning. “What does it smell like?” She asks. “Fermented earth.” Malin says. My sisters turn and look at me. “Don’t you smell it?” They ask and Maeve looks at me. “Of course I smell it, b
I haven’t had dinner in a family atmosphere like this one since my parents were killed. As I watch, Alpha Liam asks the girls about their day and their plans for tomorrow. The girls tease Xander and he gives it right back. Guardian Angel plays mediator and smiles at her mate every chance she gets, and he can barely take his eyes off of her. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking all at once. “What about you, Maeve?” Alpha Liam says, directing the conversation to me. “What about me?” I ask. “How was your day?” He asks. I’m so surprised, I stop, looking around the table. Everyone is giving me their undivided attention like they did to the others when they spoke. “My day was nice. The pack lands are beautiful. Einar is so strong and graceful. He makes it easy for me to hold on when he's carrying me.” I hear him purring beside me, making me smile and I nudge him. The girls all snicker at that. “I was worried at first when Xander said I could ride him, I had never seen a werewolf in wolf
Maeve goes inside to say goodbye to my mother and sisters. “You’re going to have to tell her,” my father says. “It will scare her off.” “You don’t know that.” “Dad, she’s been mistreated by werewolves for years. Hell, even I went to get her with the intention of killing her,” I say, running my hands through my curly hair. I hate that I went to her with such nefarious intentions. I know I scared her when I first snatched her to bring her to Rich. “I didn’t do myself any favors. She adores Einar, but if it were just me, she’d ignore me completely. And she doesn’t feel the mate bond. How am I supposed to explain it to someone that has no understanding of what it means to be mated to a werewolf?” I ask him. He leans forward and looks behind us, through the sliding glass doors, watching as my mother continues to work her own magic on my mate. “Your sisters could help you with that. You’re going to be spending the day with them tomorrow. Have them talk to her. I know they’re your litt
