The elevator opened and an empty penthouse greeted me.

Without a second thought, I blurted, “Rum?”

And he jumped out from behind the wall that was next to the kitchen. As soon as he saw me, those blue eyes widened in shock. “What the fuck!” In a flash, he was right before me, fuming. “Who the fuck did this? I swear I’m gonna beat the shit out of that useless guard! I told him to protect you at all costs.”

“Does this look like protecting someone at all costs?” He blasted, his fingers carefully tipping my chin and swaying it left and right to check my eye. “Jesus Christ, it’s swollen.”

It felt swollen. But I’m too distressed to care about it. I brushed the hand away. “It’ll go away. Just let it be.”

But Rum wouldn’t have it. He grabbed my wrist and tugged me to the kitchen.

“Rum, let go of me. It hurts.” I wasn’t in the mood to argue with him. But I really want to be left alone to sort things out. Much has happened in the past 24 hours, and I need to process them all—.
