I waited until everyone had left and closed the door, Marianne remaining silent and watching me. I approached the bed carefully, noticing Mary looking away from me to her hands.

" Sorry I didn't come sooner," I tried.

" Were you busy with something more important? " She kept looking at her hands.

" There's nothing more important than you, Mary. How are you feeling?”

" Great, did you hear the news? " She lifted her head, staring at me for the first time since we were alone.

" Mary," I groaned, as she forced a smile despite her watery eyes.

" No, it's okay, really," she wiped away a tear quickly, trying to feign joy, "I'm sure my father will get me the best wheelchair.”

I tried to hold her hand as I heard a heartfelt sob from the girl, but she pulled her hand away from my grasp.

" Mary, I'm sorry," I pleaded.

" I don't need your pity, Pyotr," she answered in an acid tone.

I closed my eyes and leaned against the railing of her bed, bowing my head.

" How much do you hate me, Mary? "
