CHAPTER SIXTY THREE

VINCENZO

There was an overwhelming ache coursing through my body as I gradually regained consciousness. My head felt like it was being pounded by a sledgehammer, and the brightness of the surroundings made me squint.

I had to blink a few times to adjust to the light. Glancing at my left hand, I noticed the IV tube connected to it. Confusion clouded my mind as I tried to piece together why I was in so much pain.

Then it all came back – the ambush, the exchange of gunfire, and my attempts to shield Nico. Damn it. I had warned him to stay put, but he had this stubborn streak, always trying to protect me in his own way. 

It was a trait he'd carried since childhood – whenever his efforts to safeguard me resulted in a mess, he'd blame himself for an eternity.
