Into the woods

Maddie was quiet but curious as I strapped her to the passenger seat of my sedan. Her big brown eyes looked at me as I buckled the seatbelt for her and slammed the door at her side.

I rounded the car and got into my driver's seat, buckling my own seatbelt and starting the engine. I eased out of the driveway of mansion. It was early in the morning and I wanted to beat the Manhattan traffic.

We were already in Long Island when she turned to me with those big innocent brown eyes, sitting up in her seat. "Where are you taking me?"

I smiled to myself, enjoying her curiosity. "Just trust me, Maddie. Relax."

"That's what they say before they take you to an unknown location and strip you of your guts."

I winced, only just realizing how much I was asking for her to trust me.
