  Mr. Hans was indeed surprised by the sudden visit of these teenagers. However, he was not entirely taken by surprise. It was actually to be expected, for he'd had lots of dealings with Anderson during the past few weeks. Had not his mind wandered to the prospective of Elizabeth inviting Archer, and that Archer was at the door, the former should have been his first expectation.

  Observing their faces, they looked disheartened, and there was a certain look that Anderson had on his face that poked at his heart as though he'd been guilty of some crime. Still, he was concerned as to what could have made them so and so, so instead of bothering with formalities, he made way for them to enter.

  As he watched, he noticed that the teenagers looked around themselves, as though expecting to find something; then they settled down and sat on the sofas (all three of them) without saying a single word, yet exchanging knowing looks.
