Chapter 38: Unforgettable memories

If the earth had a pulse, it rose through the mountains, creating their bold silhouette. To Jaden's eye, their peaks are the green line of a doctor's graph.

He saw those rocks at dawn, those slopes that give a home to so much life, a foundation for trees and shrubs, grass and ferns.

With blue above and below, in the sky and lake, ever lightening as the sun rose, Jaden thought it would be a good day for him until an old man touched his shoulder, and he was frightened.

A wizened face peered out from under a wedge of a blue hat, which was the only thing on his otherwise bald and mottled scalp save a sparse fringe of white. The old man's eyes were so heavily lidded and weighed down with wrinkled folds that it was almost like talking to someone asleep, yet he was quite awake.

"Look over there, that's you, killing people and sucking their blood out!" The old man said to Jaden as he points towards a battleground, down the mountain.
