My hands tightened on her still trembling body when it froze. I followed her gaze. Two expensive cars parked in the driveway. I knew the lawyers would be here, but that must mean she knew them and didn’t want to meet them judging by her physical reaction.

“Are you okay, Emma?” I asked, turning her face to me, tucking her hair behind her ears. Her cheeks were warm pink and blue eyes gleamed with tears. I didn’t know what I had done to make her cry, but from my experience, I knew it wasn’t a pain-cry, she needed that release. She needed to let it all out.

“I’m fine.” Her voice was clipped when she tried to get up from my lap. But I held onto her.

“You don’t know how to lie, Doll,” I said, rubbing small circles on the exposed skin of her thigh. “Even if you are not fine, I want to know. I won’t prod. Just… let me know.” Because someone died because of me when I didn’t know about their lies.
