Chapter 30
Edric's POV:
This is probably why everyone, my father included, warned me against having sex with my mate before I mark her. My wolf is out of control. The more I try to fight him, the harder he fights back – all so he can get to Maya and claim her.
Apart from marking her, the only option I have left is to run it out of our system…I think. I hope. I definitely can’t do anything with Maya again until after the ceremony. If I weren’t an Alpha, I could just mark her and get it over with, but I don’t have that luxury.
I shift as soon as I’m far enough from the house, leaving my clothes in a pile behind a tree. I give my wolf equal control. He needs it. We run as fast as we can, trees flashing by us in a blur, twisting and turning through our territory, dodging when we catch other wolves’ scents, soaring over fallen trees and ducking through the undergrowth.
Maya.
We catch her scent about a mile south of the waterfall. She shifted.

Edric's POV: My poor mate. She looks like something that had been left out in the summer sun to roast alive. Her whole body, from her hairline to the soles of her feet, is red. Blisters and scabs cover her from head to toe. Not one part of her has been spared. I can’t find one patch of clear skin. Silver leaves scars. I expected some scarring, but nothing like this. Edric's POV: I stare at Marcus, completely confused. Nothing he just said makes any sense. Either they misinterpreted the prophecy, or he’s talking about something else. “What are you talking about? Maya isn’t here to destroy werewolves. She is a wolf.” No one really understands the prophecy. Interpretations of it vary wildly. It all just depends on who you talk to. I’m one of those that simply don’t know what to believe, but I’m sure it will be revealed to us in time. “I’m not talking about the prophecy. Edric's POV: I sit on my bed, running the day’s events through my mind. A lot has happened in the last three days, and I haven’t had a moment to absorb and process. Doc decided to keep Maya sedated until tomorrow. She isn’t healing as fast as he’d like, and he figures she’ll heal faster if she sleeps. It doesn’t help that she is malnourished and underweight, but there’s no quick fix for that. I haven’t slept for several nights. After he sedated Maya, Doc sent me away with instructions to get some rest, but I can’t still my mind long enough to fall asleep. Usually, it helps if I go out for a run, but I’m too tired to shift. I haven’t really spoken to or seen Edric since my last day in the clinic. I see him in the mornings before he leaves for work, and if I can stay awake long enough, I see him at night when he’s done with pack business for the day.
