I wasn’t sure who was more surprised, Mom or me? How did I outrank him? Was it the mate thing with Ryder? Had to be that.
Harry continued. “Some other packs have gotten involved, some for us, some for Ryan. I heard Alpha Ryan promised to give Beth to an alpha thirty years her senior as a mate if the alpha supports him against Brent.”
Ew, gross! Did Beth know? Was that why she was so angry? I took a breath to ask the question I had been dreading. “Is Alpha Ryan winning?” My stomach churned at the thought of it.
“No one is really winning. Both sides are matched, both in force and in casualties.”
“Brook,” Mom said, patting my hand with hers. “You shouldn’t think about this. There is nothing you can do.”

“Let me go, you bastard!” I shouted, but surprise, surprise, Mike didn’t listen. Instead, he pulled me away from the clearing and through the woods. Mike dragged me through the brambles and brush. He didn’t slow until we reached a quiet residential neighborhood. Mike marched me over to a large red van parked across the street. He opened the door, shoving me towards it. I cried out as a couple of men grabbed my arms, ignoring my pain, and pulled me inside. Anna sat across from me with a satisfied, smug grin. I couldn’t help myself. I had to ask the dreaded question. “Why?” “Why not? I pulled on the restraints, growling in anger. How they could hold me down. I’m a werewolf! No cloth cuffs should be able to keep me tied to the bed. This was unbelievable. Alpha Ryan had Brook, and here I was, strapped to a hospital bed. Who knows what he was doing to her? It was my fault. I should have been faster. I failed my mate, and I had to fix it! My whole body ached with my wolf being so close to the surface. My nails had grown longer and darker, while dark hair peppered my arms. The new sharpness of my teeth cut the insides of my mouth, and I tasted blood. It only made the wolf even more anxious. I pulled on the cuffs again, to no avail, and howled in fury. “If you want out of bed, you’re going to need to calm down, Ryder,” Dad demanded from the door. His face was uncharacteristically hard. I paced from my cot to as far as the chain would let me go, then back again. With no windows, I had no way of telling how long I’d been down there, but any time was too long for me. The sound of the door opening sent me hurrying back to the cot. I pressed myself into the corner as the heavy footsteps came down the wooden stairs. Mike’s mom stepped out of the way when she reached the bottom, allowing room for Doctor Samson to come off the stairs. “Here she is, doctor,” Mike’s mom said as if having someone chained in the basement was normal. Maybe for her, it was. The doc, at least, had the good sense to appear horrified by my situation. He walked over to me; his expression somber. “What seems to be the problem?” “Besides the obvious?” I said, moving my leg so the chain would rattle.

The drive was quicker this time. I still continued to pray when the van stopped. Mike’s dad pushed open the door and pulled me out. Again, he didn’t even let me have the chance to gain my footing. As I looked around, I realized I had no idea where I was. We stood in a field of wild grass with a cliff to the right of me. I heard water, so at the base had to be a lake or a river of some sort. Mike and three of the alpha’s men came with us. They all seemed to wait for someone and as I heard an approaching car, again dread filled me. Please let it not be Ryder’s dad. I swear it’s hilarious,” I told her. “Ever since you came back and I could be ‘okay’ again, he has been asking about my health and even brought me my lunch today. The guy is terrified with the idea of something happening to me and that he’ll have to be the alpha.”I continued to rattle on, hoping to distract myself when all I wanted was Brook to open her eyes to tell me she was going to be okay.
