The room felt hot and stifling, and the light from the red candles burning on the altar, did nothing to illuminate the dark shadows lurking in the corners. The pungent aroma of burning incense was suffocating and left a bitter aftertaste in her mouth. The altar was crowded with strange and grotesque statuettes, and pieces of bones, hair and various other paraphernalia associated with voodoo.
Nervous, she looked around, hoping but also dreading that there might be someone else in the room. Faint movement in a far corner of the room caught her eye and she immediately turned, while wishing that her heartbeat didn't sound so loud in the quiet room. She strained her eyes, peering into the shadows, trying to see if there was anyone there, but it was no use, she couldn't see anything in the dim light.
From somewhere outside, she heard voices chanting and something told her that this room was their destination. She glanced around the room, looking for a place to hi
Zeke sat behind his desk, facing Merlin and Sébastien, a frown on his face, as he listened to them talking. Merlin had just finished telling Sébastien about her dreams and they waited as he sat in thoughtful silence. Growing increasingly anxious, she spoke first."I think it's some kind of warning""You could be right", Sébastien still looked lost in thought, "How well did you know Sandrine?""Not very", Merlin shrugged, "I met her for the first time not long after I came here""And you're sure that it's Sandrine in your dreams?""I'm absolutely certain""I'm not entirely convinced that it is, sometimes dreams can be figurative, metaphorical. She could just be a representation of something or someone else", Sébastien sat forward in his chair, looking between Zeke and Merlin."Like who?", they both a
The walls of Zeke’s study fell away and Sébastien found himself standing in the middle of the city at night. Bright lights were strung high above the streets, extended between the balconies of the buildings on either side. Jazz music blared from a club across the road, as patrons milled around in front of the doors, sipping alcohol from large plastic cups. There were people everywhere, talking in loud and excited voices, as they strolled across the pavement, before disappearing into one of the many nightclubs and shops in the street.Sébastien moved cautiously through the crowd, his eyes searching for Merlin, while wondering where she could be. He had almost reached the end of the street, when he saw an artist painting a mural, that stood propped up against a brick wall. Looking closer, he spotted Merlin, standing in front of the mural, gazing at the unfolding images with keen interest. He went to stand beside her, watching the artist d
Merlin raised her hand to her mouth in an effort to muffle the scream that was threatening to come out. Beside her, Sébastien stepped out of the shadows, placing himself between the two women. He hid his anxiety and surprise, feigning nonchalance, while he began calculating their exit back to the waking world."Sébastien Darkmoon, you're becoming a thorn in my side", Sandrine purred."Your heart would be better", came his casual reply."That's not an option", she snapped. He shrugged indifferently, and looked around the now empty room, realizing with dismay that there really was only one exit. It wasn't impossible to escape, but it would just be a little more complicated. Sandrine wasn't supposed to be able to see them, she couldn't possibly possess that kind of magic. Not her. Someone else was using her, using her body, Sandrine would still be there, inside, but trapp
The four of them sat in Zeke’s study, sipping on steaming mugs of coffee, as Merlin and Sébastien recounted their experience with Gilbert. Juliette glanced uneasily at Sébastien as Merlin described how she brought them back. Sébastien seemed as impassive as always, his face giving nothing away, but she knew that he must be thinking about the same thing as she was.Merlin’s powers were growing at an alarming rate and it seemed that even she didn't know the full extent of her magical abilities. Juliette wasn't sure that she would be of any use to her now, her magical abilities far exceeded those of Juliette's before she had lost her magic. The logical choice would be for Sébastien to take over her training, as he had more experience with dark magic and voodoo. The question was, would he be willing to undertake such a task. Sébastien had never been known to offer tutelage to anyone and it was anyone's bet if he w
The next day, final preparations for the ball, kept everyone busy, but they were able to meet for a short while in Zeke’s study. It was already lunch time so Merlin and Juliette brought lunch from the kitchen and they ate while they talked."What do you think Gilbert will do now?", Zeke asked Sébastien, around a mouthful of food."Tonight at the ball would be the perfect opportunity for him to try to find a new vessel and get close to Merlin", Sébastien replied thoughtfully."Tonight? So soon?", Merlin queried, wiping the corners of her mouth with a paper napkin. She hadn't expected him to strike so quickly and she had to admit that she didn't think that she was fully prepared for another confrontation with the necromancer."I agree with Sébastien, I'm afraid. Gilbert is not a patient man and he knows that we won't be expec
The Alpha's mansion was packed with all the visiting Alphas, each bringing their own personal entourage. The mansion had been decorated in silver and gold, with swaths of gauzy silver and gold fabric, hanging from the ceiling around the dance floor in the ballroom. The doors to the terrace were thrown open and guests had spilled out into the gardens and the chilly night, where fairy lights were strung out through the trees. There were tables crammed with sumptuous dishes and bars serving drinks, interspersed throughout the ballroom and gardens. Waiters moved among the guests, taking and delivering orders, while a live band played on stage in the ballroom.Mingling with their guests, Zeke kept his arm securely wrapped around Merlin’s waist, as they worked their way through the crowd. They were a beautiful couple, with Zeke, darkly handsome in his tux, while Merlin dazzled in a shimmering gold ballgown with silver sequins. Her hair
Zeke escorted the two women through the gardens, as they strolled back to the terrace, when suddenly he caught a whiff of an unfamiliar scent. He froze, his body tense, as he looked around the gardens, trying to pinpoint the source. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end, bristling, as the scent grew stronger. He sensed movement from the edge of the forest, something was moving out there, under the trees, and it was getting closer.Sensing the tension, radiating in waves from Zeke, Merlin paused and turned to look back at him. He stood rigidly, in the middle of the footpath, staring into the darkness of the forest. Following his line of sight, she strained her eyes, trying to see what he was seeing, when Juliette appeared beside her."Merlin", Juliette's voice was barely a whisper."Get inside Juliette. Now!", she hissed, standing in front of her.Juliette looked aroun
Juliette was in the kitchen having breakfast when Zeke walked in to grab a plate for Merlin. She looked up at him and smiled around a mouthful of bacon."Hey, how is she?""She's doing great, just needs a lot of rest but she'll be back practicing tomorrow", Zeke replied, returning her smile."Good to hear, I'll come by later today if that's okay?""She'll love that, I'll let her know", Zeke turned to leave then remembering something, turned back."Did Sébastien tell you he was leaving?""No, when?" Juliette felt a lump forming in her throat."Actually he's already gone, he left early this morning""Well he probably needed to go back.....his pack needs him", she was trying to keep her tone even."Yeah, he said the same. I gotta get this to Merlin, I'll see you later", he said, as he turned and left the kitchen.Juliette stared down at her plate, suddenly her appetite was g
