Chapter 36: The Flames

I peeped out of the entrance door and saw three brooding figures clad in black cloaks. I froze as I leaned against the door.

“What are we going to do, dad?” I asked helplessly.

“Let’s have Arlo get to safety first, then will take it from there.” My father was also anxious, but he put up a brave facade.

I went to Arlo’s sleeping figure and gently woke him up. I felt bad as he was rubbing his eyes out of tiredness, but we had no other choice.

“Mommy’s sorry for waking you up, but do you want to play with mommy right now?”

Arlo looked up, confused. “Play?”

“Yes, let’s see who can hide for the longest time, okay.” I carried him up to our room and placed him in the walk-in closet. I kneeled in front of him and gently smoothed out his hair.
