The hammering only stopped late in the night. Kiera felt physically drained. She couldn’t figure out where her energy went. It was Kane’s fault, of that she had no doubt about. He put her in a position where it was impossible for her to make a decision without having to live with deep regrets. On the one hand, she could choose to forget Mikael and stay with him Simone while he went out and cleaned the mess she started. On the other, she went in search of Mikael and lost Kane’s support forever. Simone understood. It was a relief but not the one Kiera would have liked. Simone would always take her son’s side. It wasn’t a question about whether or not she loved Kiera; Kiera did not doubt the love she had for her. But Kane was her blood. She would not choose the daughter she raised over the son she birthed. Kiera wasn’t delusional enough to think that she would have her full support. It was the reason why she didn’t tell him to stop downstairs. Kiera turned on her side with a groan.

Kane looked at his mother with a mixture of surprise and rage. “Ma?”“You heard me the first time,” Simone said, stepping closer to them. They had been so busy arguing that they didn’t realize that she had opened the kitchen door and stood watching them. Kiera stepped away from him, feeling ashamed that she had almost lost her temper. Arguing was not what she intended to do but Kane was getting under her skin. She detested how he felt like he could tell her what to do with her life. Perhaps she never minded it before but it was different now. She had learned to trust her instincts and make her decisions. She was no longer a child that he could protect. She was an adult. If Kiera were being completely honest with herself, she thought that the hunt for Mikael would be a lot easier. And faster. She thought she would have found him on the first night that she, Kane, and Simone left their house. She was quite optimistic and would never forget that moment when everything felt like it was falling into place, and that things could be set right. Kane was getting involved instead of fighting her about it. She had Simone's full support. "Gone?" Kiera echoed. Her heart was racing, and she felt that she would pass out at any minute. The man looked at her with rage in his eyes but she ignored that for now. She had other concerns and Kane was with her. He would never let anyone hurt her. "He's been killed?" Kane asked in a low voice. Kiera didn't want to read too much into his words, because in her frantic heart, he sounded hopeful.The man flashed them a red smile. "Not yet. "I found another one," Kane said the second he walked through the door. He took off his jacket, and Kiera stood from the couch to meet him at the door. He hung the jacket and turned to her with his hands on his hips. "I might have found out something.""What?" she asked. "There's a clue about DarkWater," was his answer. "There's a pack mate who works at Bertmann & Co downtown. You know, the lawyer's office?""There's a werewolf lawyer?" she asked in wonder. "I don't know if he's a lawyer, but he works there. They had been parked in front of the office for the longest time. Kane wanted to catch a glimpse of him. He wouldn’t park beside the office for the whole day, that would make the werewolf suspicious, and if that happened, their plan would simply not work out. He wanted to see him, and hopefully smell him, and then he’d be sure that a werewolf worked in the building. He had to do so at a distance, and that made it somewhat difficult, but he would manage. It wasn’t his first time tracking a werewolf from a distance, especially because he couldn’t have the werewolf noticing him. Kiera and Kane spotted the wolf coming out of the office building. This time was different; he didn’t look around suspiciously, and so they deduced that the morning had been a coincidence. Surely if he had suspected someone watching him in the morning, he would have looked around to ensure that there was nobody spying on him now. They looked at each other, and visibly relaxed. Kane started the car when the werewolf had crossed the street. He didn’t turn to look at them, and although Kiera found it suspicious, she didn’t say a word. He got into a black sedan and backed out from the parking space. After he did, Kane waited a beat and then started following him. There were two cars between them, but both of them had their eyes on the werewolf’s car so they wouldn’t lose sight of it. Kiera was shaking as she drove away.She could hardly see the road ahead of her because of the tears gathering in her eyes and streaming down her face. Her shoulders shook with her sobs, and she kept glancing at the rear view mirror to see if she was being followed. So far, she couldn’t see any suspicious activity, and the truth was that she was getting to a point where she didn’t care.
