"Wh..what?"

For a second, I swear my heart leaves me.

She can’t have said-

“What?”

I repeat because the words she spewed are not on the script; they are not words anyone should ever utter to me at this time.

"Yes, my tests are one hundred-"

"Shut up, shut- oh god. Why? Why is everyone playing tricks on me? am I- am I wearing a sign on my back that says ‘kick me’ or ‘tell me a practical joke’?”

Her lips part slightly before sealing once more.

“No, no, I’m not- I would know if I were pregnant.”

“Well, that’s not necessarily true if you have never been pregnant before. I mean, what would you relate the symptoms to?”

“You are not helping- oh god…oh, Elaine. Oh my god…oh my god, I can’t leave… no, no, you can't tell the Alpha about this."

The news refuses to settle within me as each time my mind toys with the idea of my womb carrying life, a new question hits me.
