As soon as I’d zipped up the small purse it was taken from me again, strong hands putting it on the seat out of my reach before he turned to me. The companion towered over me, his face stern, almost displeased, a large brow only kept attractive by an equally large, set jaw and dark piercing eyes. I gulped, unable to hide the ripple of fear that ran through me.

“Everyone says you’re the best courtesan to ever be unveiled in the city,” he said.

“I can’t speak to that. But the companions I’ve met so far have always gone away happy,” I replied. He nodded at this and looked me over, but there was nothing sexual about it. It was almost like a dealer surveying an offered good while he considered how much he’d pay for it, or if it was worth the request made to go with it.

“There’s not a lot to you, but you’re decorated well. Heard them say you were like a walking piece of art. Almost think I’d snap you if I screwed you, but Rick said you were sturdy, and you took to his lessons well.”
