IRIS

My blood froze as I let the hand holding the phone fall.

Les must have sensed the change in my demeanor because he approached me with concern in his observing eyes. “What's wrong?”

My gaze slid to him and I opened my mouth to speak but couldn't. All I knew was that my heart was beating faster than I could think. All of a sudden, my mouth goes dry and Les had to immediately find me a chair to sit on.

By now, everyone else had caught on to the fact that something was wrong and were approaching with a mixture of concern and confusion on their faces. Someone, somewhere turned off the music which made me both grateful and at the same time, embarrassed.

In a matter of minutes, My friends and family surrounded me while I tried to catch my breath and still my racing heart. I didn't even know when Les took my hand in his and was now rubbing soothing circles on it.

Hilda sat on my other side rubbing circles on my back while everyone else asked me varying forms of if I was okay. I nodd
