Chapter 67

He stops on the side of the narrow road and I get out. On this part of the estate, the plants are so overgrown that they look like they’re taking over the landscape, reclaiming ground that once belonged to them.

There’s an untamed beauty to it.

“Emily, are you okay?” he asks from behind me.

“I don’t know,” I reply. “I feel like I’ve been here before. I know it sounds crazy, but I feel a connection to this place.”

He comes to stand next to me.

“No, you don’t sound crazy.”

It’s as if he’s about to say something else but he stays quiet.

The unexpected tears come like an outpouring of grief I’ve held in for so many years. I can’t explain it. It’s confusing even to me. Instead of stopping them, I let them flow.

Thaddeus holds me in his arms and I welcome the comfort of his touch.

I laugh quietly. “Look at me. I’m a mess and we haven’t even gotten to your house yet.”

I wipe my eyes and my fingers bear the markings of smudged mascara.
