Three

Trey watched her sleep and wondered how someone could look so adorable in their sleep. She looked so peaceful. This was a far cry from some hours ago when she had cried out in her sleep. The attack from the Leviathan had probably made its way into her dreams turning them to nightmares. She had tossed and flailed on the bed screaming. He’d to hold her down before she hurt herself. It had taken some minutes before he could soothe her and she finally went back to sleep. He had returned to his position on the chair after. From where he sat, he had a good view of the path leading up to the entrance and if he stretched a bit forward, he could see most of the backyard. Trey didn’t want anybody sneaking up on him. He was certain no one had followed him to the motel but one could never be too sure and he couldn’t afford to make mistakes. Not now. The ones he had made already were still haunting him and the scars they had left etched deeply into his skin. He stood up to check if he could see anybody or anything outside but he was actually trying to clear his head. The memories had come without warning. Outside the motel, movement was still minimal. Nobody seemed to be out of the ordinary and so a relieved Trey turned back to the room. She was beginning to turn and twist a bit again and for a second he feared she was having another episode, but on the contrary she was just getting ready to wake up. He watched with amusement as her eyes moved around the room, taking in her surrounding.  Then a pair of dark blue eyes stared hotly at him, taking him in and measuring him. She was quite scared he could tell, even though she was trying to hide that. Sure a lot of other emotions lay underneath but fear was more palpable than  she was trying to let on. He could hear her heart pounding furiously as he inched carefully close to where she was. In the last minute though, he walked to the chair he had just vacated instead and emptied himself into it. He knew he needed to be seated to deal with the avalanche of questions and tears that were to come flying at him soon.

Everything seemed like a scene in a badly written movie to Hailey. Her eyes flitted over the sparsely furnished motel room until they found him. Trey Kristov. The only person who could answer her questions and tell her what the hell happened last night. She was a bit scared, no actually, she was really scared of him. Although, some tiny voice within told her he was not exactly the threat. At the moment, he was seated comfortably, looking at everything else in the room but her. He seemed quite amused with himself even. It was truly hard to see him as a threat when he looked like this, almost cute in a roguish way, if that’s even a thing. Hailey slapped herself mentally wondering how she could be thinking of something like that, with everything that had happened last night. Last night. The whole scenario played out in her head and her stomach took a big lurch. She had nearly died last night. Her shoulder throbbed at that instant and she looked down to see it bandaged. It was probably done by him. Taking a look at him again, she decided to find out what was going on. The questions plaguing her needed answering fast.

“Who are you?”  She questioned, trying her best to sound tough.

He lazily turned his gaze towards her and watched her for some minutes which seemed like an eternity to her. It seemed like he was appraising her or something. She clutched the blanket around her more firmly. Was he pretending not to have heard her or he simply didn’t want to answer? Hailey wasn’t sure so she proceeded to ask again

“I said who are you?” His lips curved into a smile before the reply came.

“You already know me”.

“No, I don’t. Sure, I know your name but beyond that, nothing else. I want to know what you guys want from me. I want to know why that guy attacked me yesterday and why it happened immediately after you showed up. I need to know exactly how you knew what time to show up. Maybe, you’re working together with him. And your name sounds so ridiculous it must be an alias. So you see? I do not know you Mister.”

Hailey had kept her eyes plastered on his face while she ranted but his face remained impassive until the part where she said his name was an alias. She’d noticed that in the passing of a shadow on his face, briefly. It’d have been missed if she hadn’t been watching him keenly. He cleared his throat before answering finally.

“My name’s Trey Kristov and it’s no alias”.

“Okay. And that answers all the questions I just asked or what?” she queried again, not exactly why she was getting furious. Maybe it had something to do with her close brush with death or something.

“The thing is, some dangerous people want something from you and they will do anything to get what they want”.

“You mean the blood stuff? Blood flower?”

He quirked an eyebrow at her question, he probably didn’t expect her to remember but she did and he should deal with that.

“it’s the Blood Orchid”.

“What’s it for? Why would someone want it that bad?”, She asked but Trey was done answering questions and he just shrugged in response.

“How do I know you are not one of the dangerous people after me? What’s to make me believe that you are actually here to help me?”

He studied her for a moment, his expression inscrutable at best. She couldn’t tell if he was annoyed or something.

“I am trying to help you, he said, I am the one who saved your ass and brought you here”.

Oh, he was annoyed alright. Good, maybe she could get him to let out something, anything that might help her make sense of this situation.

“And it’s just your word that I’m supposed to take for it?”. She  asked even though the answer was pretty obvious. If he had wanted to hurt her, he would have had a million chances while she slept.

His reply was curt and indifferent. “I guess so”

“Okay, that’s it. I’m calling the Cops"

That ought to do it,she thought.
