LILY’S POV
After the first time, I tried to cook for Derek and he yelled at my face, I stopped trying to please him. It was evident that he’s a naturally angry man and he gets angry for a living. If he’s to get paid for the number of times he got angry since I came here, he would probably own two houses on this street and not one.
It was Saturday night and just like Friday night, Derek had left the house around 6 in the evening, the only difference was his dressing, he dressed casually on Friday but today, he dressed like he had an event he would be attending.
I could finally turn the lights on as I wasn’t sensitive to these types of lights. I sat on the couch with a bowl of popcorn to watch one of my favorite shows. It was a marathon night by the way. I was on the third episode when my phone started ringing. I rushed towards the dining area where the phone was and saw it was Mrs. Miller.
“Hello, Lily,” She called excitedly.
“Good evening, Mrs. Miller,” I greeted.
‘Stop being so formal with me, darling, you’re my daughter-in-law now, silly,” I blushed.
“Thank you, Mrs. Miller. I’m not used to it yet,” I confessed.
“It's okay, my love,” She said something to someone on the other and of the line. “Sorry about that, Lily. Are you at the party? Did Derek take you with him?” She asked. Party?
“What are you talking about, Mrs. Miller. I’m at home,” I informed her, not sure I understand what she was talking about.
“I’m going to kill Derek when I see him,” I laughed. “Don’t worry about it, my dear. Have you received your admission letter?”
“No,” I told her, I’d been expecting it all morning but nothing came through the mail.
“Have you checked your email as well?” She asked. My eyes went wide in the realization of my mistake. I was so stupid enough to not check the other alternative.
“I’ll check it now and get back to you, Mrs. Miller,” I told her.
Full of hope, I dropped the call and opened my email. I screamed excitedly when I saw the mail from my dream university. I didn’t bother to read the rest of the email after I saw the ‘Congratulations, Lily Miller, you have been admitted into……’ I closed the mail and gave Mrs. Miller another call but she didn’t pick up, so I sent her a happy message.
She replied immediately and told me she would see me the next day to discuss the fee and everything. My excitement died down once I realized there was the issue of the school fees, I’d applied for a scholarship but I doubted if I would be given the scholarship. I can’t continue to be a burden on the Millers. Mrs. Miller had helped me a lot and I can’t believe she would have to pay my school fees for the next four years.
Disappointment clouded my vision and I switched off the TV and lay on the sofa. A lone tear dropped from my eyes as realization hit me. I need a job, I need to find a job but at the same time, I’ve never done any job in my life, what am I supposed to do.
Should I just leave everything and go back? Would Mrs. Miller be happy with that decision? Won’t she be disappointed in me?
I was wallowing in my inner turmoil for hours, thinking about the several alternatives that I could find but still, I got none. When I thought about everything I’d gone through, I realized, that going back home was not an option, it shouldn’t even be an option.
The front door was thrown open suddenly and I was thrown out of my deep thoughts. I sat up straight on the chair to watch Derek walk in with so much anger. Whoever pisses him off had probably had it coming with his bloody hand. When he turned to face me, his eyes were bloodshot. There was a bruise underneath his eyes and he had a busted lip. I wasn’t as surprised as I thought I would be about his bruises because his anger was probably a path to his destruction.
“I fucking hate him,”
Oh, God! I whispered as I watched him throw a tumbler against the wall, breaking the cup and he proceeded to pick up the second cup which was a mug. At that point, I wrapped my hand on my body as I sat on the floor, scared of him and what he could do next. He muttered some words underneath his breath and walked to his room, closing the door behind him.
I walked over to the dining area to see the level of damage he had done and I could say, he was a monster. On the broken shards of glasses was blood, probably from his feet. I walked into the kitchen to find something to pack the shards of glasses before they would hurt another person, which was me. After I’d done that, I got an ice pack and the first aid box. I wasn’t helping because he was Derek Miller but I was helping because of his mom and because I’d been there. He probably wouldn’t feel anything right now but by morning, he would think a truckload of potatoes ran over him.
I gently knocked on his door thrice but he didn’t answer, so I entered all by myself, he would probably scream again but that wouldn’t change a thing. I walked in to find him lying on his bed, his suit and shirt on the floor. His belt was unbuckled showing the edge of his underwear. I was first mesmerized by how toned his body was until I saw the bruises underneath his rib.
Did he fight in a WWE show?
“Derek,” I whispered. He didn’t stand up or look at me. He already placed an arm on his face before I entered. I sat beside him on the bed, watching him breathe angrily.
I placed the icepack on the bruise underneath his rib and he instantly grabbed my hand, stopping me.
“Sorry,” I apologized immediately.
“Get out,” It was more like a plea rather than a command. It had come out gently despite how mad he was. Before I walked out, I got a glimpse of his face, and I didn’t want to believe that was actually what I saw. It wasn’t possible, I didn’t see a teardrop from his eyes, and it was probably an imagination.
Derek’s POV “What’s up with you, Derek?” Henry Salvatore, my second best friend asked. He’s probably my favorite person after Sebastian but there are times when I want to just strangle him and today is one of those days.“You can’t just barge into my office to ask me a stupid question, Henry. Courtesy demand you knock,” I spat. I was angry, really angry. I’ve been avoiding my parents since Saturday night because I know what they wanted to say.I’d attended Lucas’ welcome back party with Sebastian and Henry with the intention of having a good time without any troubles and leaving the party if possible, without having a confrontation with Lucas but that never happened because trouble seems to follow me everywhere I go. Heck! It probably put a tracker on me.“Since when did we start being so official?” he asked. I didn’t give him
Derek’s POV ‘God, please, don’t tell me she’s waiting for me,’I mumbled under my breath as I walked down the stairs the next morning to find Lily waiting for me. She was sitting with her back facing me on one of the chairs in the dining area. I didn’t get the chance to tell her I wouldn’t be taking her to college this morning because, by the time I returned last night, she was already sleeping. I groaned as I took every step closer to her.I might have stupidly signed up for marriage but babysitting is not something I’m up for. I fucking hate responsibilities. She stood up and turned to face me as I walked closer to her. She was putting on a cute outfit. I still don’t know how but she looked a little different.“Mrs. Miller told me you’ll drop me off at school today,” She informed me about my most hated duty.&
Lily’s POV I was surprised when Derek called me and asked about my whereabouts. I’d been home all day. After he left angrily this morning, I went up to bed and refused to attend college or even leave the room, some of his words hurt me and they brought back dark and horrible memories. Instead of crying, I slept throughout the day, hoping by the time I woke up the next morning, I would’ve forgotten everything that happened the previous day. I didn’t expect it’ll be Derek’s call that’ll wake me up.The door of my room was suddenly opened and I sat up on the bed, shocked at the intrusion and wondering who could’ve entered without knocking. I didn’t get to wonder for too long before the sailor started his favorite occupation.“Why the fuck is this place dark?” Derek spat. I put on the flashlight so he could put on the light.“You didn’t
Lily’s POVThroughout the rest of the week, Derek dropped me off at school in the morning, while I find my way home together with Scarlet in the afternoon and sometimes in the evening. It was peaceful that way since I would be asleep before Derek gets back from work and the ride was usually occupied with a business conversation between Derek and someone on the phone or Q. I and Scarlet usually stay behind sometime after classes to tour around the college or get Lunch at a fancy restaurant a few meters away from college.Bad enough, I was still living off the Millers’ credit card. The best part was, Scarlet lived on the same street as I did. She had invited me over to her place on Friday but I lied that I had something to do. I felt it was too early for such an invitation, we’ve barely known each other for three days.I didn’t have any classes on Friday so I d
LILYS POVAfter I woke up the next morning, I did some laundry, made myself some toasted bread and a cup of coffee. As I sat on the dining table, eating, Derek walked out of his room, shirtless again with black loose pants.I quickly looked away from him and focused on my phone as I absentmindedly read through the banter going on in the class study group that was created. Someone had called the other a dummy and they were busy assessing how stupid they were in their respective families. He walked past me into the kitchen and a few minutes later, came back with his own cup of coffee. I was surprised to see him sit opposite me.I quickly stood up, washed my plate in the kitchen, and took my mug of coffee to the living room. I still had some assignments to fix. So I sat in front of the center table and opened my laptop. The mug was beside me while I searched through my bag for a pen and paper.
Derek’s POV Caster is my younger brother, the middle child of the family, my parent’s favorite son, and our last-child favorite sibling. I mean, he’s an embodiment of perfection and it has always been like that from the start. We were particularly close at some point until I discovered that our parents were trying to stop the budding friendship between us because they thought I would badly influence him. I didn’t wait for them to say it to my face, I changed college since we attended the same college just to let him live his life the way they wanted. He’s a top lawyer at one of the biggest firms in the state and also one of dad’s legal representatives. My parents wouldn’t stop singing his praises every day and I haven’t been to my parents’ home in years because of that shit. Now, I’m surprised why he left their home for mine. “What the hell are you doing in my house, Caster?” I asked him, turning away from Lily.
LILY’s POVI’ve always seen Derek as a handsome devil but seeing his brother, Caster almost made me change my perception of Derek. He was a better version of his brother in terms of looks and I hope it was the same in terms of attitude. A family doesn’t deserve to have two sons with the same attitude as Derek. One cursing sailor is enough!Avoiding Derek and his brother for the rest of Sunday was easy since they both mostly stayed in their rooms while I stayed in mine. I could only hear the doors being closed and opened at intervals. I only sneaked down at midnight to get some snacks when hunger almost crippled me.Monday mornings were the worst, not totally my best day but it’s a reminder that I have to get up and sma
“Derek Miller!”I almost melted as I turned to see Derek leaning against a car, wearing a casual outfit and a sunshade in front of my department building. He was busy doing something on his phone. A thousand questions ran through my head as I tried to reason why Derek will show up in my department without notifying me. Did something happen? Did someone die? I know Derek wasn’t nice enough to pick me up at school. Some girls were waving at him but he ignored them. I never knew Derek was that popular until today, even Scarlet had stood rooted at a spot as she continued staring at Derek with her mouth hanging open.As soon as his eyes landed on me, he signaled. I swallowed hard as beads of sweat appeared on my face. I w
