Jane can't imagine how Zee must be feeling.

Simon looked so fragile in that bed, and Jane tried everything-meds, spells, and every other remedy she could think of-to save him, but nothing worked. With all her connections, she couldn't improve Simon's condition by a single fraction.

But that's neither here nor there. The doctor will attend to Simon now. All they can do is hope. Despite their fight and the enormity of what currently stands between them, Jane would do anything and will do anything she can to lessen Zee's pain.

She takes Zee's hand in hers and watches Zee's eyes flutter open and catch on her, clouded with distress and grief. Jane's heart squeezes, and she wishes she could take some of it into herself so Zee didn't have to carry it on his own.

Zee's hand is limp between her, cold and heavy, and Jane rubs her thumbs into his skin. She remembers all the times that Zee held her hand-a reassuring weight that grounded her, a tangible
