His voice came out calm and kind, if such things existed.

I still harboured a grudge against him for what he said and what he called me. He was the architect of this whole drama, and I was mad at him. I knew that, unlike Lyon, I couldn’t stay mad at this man for long.

“What do you want?” I asked, and my voice came out snappy.

“You know what I want.”

I know what I wish you’d want, but that is not the issue at hand.

“I do not wish to see you or speak to you or Dad, so go away now. I would like to be alone,” I answered.

“I can’t do that. I can’t leave while you are angry and hurting because of me,” he said. I’d never seen Jace bothered about anything before, but he spoke now, and I knew he was bothered.

He should. He called me a mishap!

“Please, let me in. I need to see you and talk to you,” he said, his pleading voice coming through and weakening my body. I found myself wanting to let him in, to let him see me. I wanted to see him and his face. If he hadn’t said the things he said earlie
