Chapter 46

Amerie was climbing out of her 4 Runner after just arriving at the pack house when she heard Everett call to her. The thing inside her twisted with apprehension—she had grown to understand it more as it appeared to grow to understand her. Despite her wariness, she turned and smiled softly at Everett, hoping to hide her feelings and newly acquired knowledge. Everett’s eyes carefully traced her face, searching for anything out of sort. She stifled a sigh of relief when his gaze softened and he returned her smile.

“Feeling better after yesterday?” he questioned genuinely.

No. “Yes,” she forced out. “I needed a day to relax. It’s hard to remember how new this still is to me sometimes until the weight of it hits me.” Not completely a lie, but certainly not a whole truth. “How are you doing? You look—“ she paused, searching for any bruise or sign of him favoring his leg but found nothing. “You look great, really.”
