Chapter 66
The morning passed in a flurry of laughter. The lake was beautiful, like almost everything in this rugged terrain.
The horizon was completely unmarred by humans. All my eyes could see, was mile after mile of beautiful woodlands and heathland, stretching in every direction, all culminating in the centre of a vast expanse of water.
The ice was thick over the top ensuring that we were safe enough to walk across it without worrying about breaking through and plunging into the freezing depths.
Alexander had been right, the area was sheltered from the worst of the winter weather, meaning that we could skate happily without the bitterness of the wind interfering. We spent a happy morning doing just that. And I was surprised more than once at how confident Alexander was on the ice.

Alexander I trekked across the snowy ground, my feet crunching with each step as I break through the icy crust that had formed over last night’s snow fall. Returning back to the cottage was no longer an option for Alexander. He has learnt his lesson the hard way. His uncle had rattled him, more than he would ever care to admit to me. After Arthur’s admissions it took Alex a long time to calm down. When we eventually made it back to our rooms, which were cheerless and cold when we arrived seeing as no one had expected our appearance so soon, rather than resting he spent the night pacing. He was determined to try and find a way out of the arrangement for Lucille. Try as I might to understand what the issue with the young Alpha was, he refused to tell me outright. The room broke out into noise. Some fighting in agreement to their Kings suggestions. Other arguing that Estelle couldn’t be trusted any more than Alpha Byron. Eventually, after what felt like hours of heated debate, it was decided in favour of Estelle being offered as a suitable candidate. I found myself surprised at the sudden change in situation. I should have had more faith in Alex, knowing that he wouldn’t just let Lucille be sold to the highest bidder. But more surprising, I found myself feeling slightly sad for Estelle. She and I had never been friends. In fact, we were enemies in many ways, but that didn’t mean that I wished this fate upon her. Yet it seemed to be in the interested of everyone. Not only did Alex fulfil his saviours wishes of helping his daughter find a respectable match. And at that it was, despite the young Alpha’s reputation of being akin to his father, he was a well suited noble that Estelle’s family would deem suitable for their daughter.

Telling Estelle that she would be bargained off to a man who was notorious at being awful was not an easy task to undertake. At first, she refused point blank, declaring that she would rather be thrown down a hole with only snakes to keep her company that to do what Alexander wished her to do. But after what felt like the hundredth times of explaining the merits of the marriage, she agreed. Whether by seeing the profit in it for herself, or purely because she knew that if she agreed or not had no standing in this arrangement. But either way, she agreed, and Alex had at least won this round. With any hope of a romantic final night together well and truly out of the picture. Once the sun had fully risen in the sky, Castle Black was a hive of activity, and there was barely enough room to move. Something which wouldn’t even rectify after the evacuees had left this evening. Every hall was blocked with the half-naked forms of men drinking and eating their fill, the Christmas decorations now hanging drab around them. Even outside the castle, the streets were just as full. Bonfires glowing on every street corner to keep the people warm. Some chose to remain in their wolf forms in order to stave off the winter cold. Although the snow no longer rained down, the temperature remained below freezing, meaning that all the snow that was already laid piled had now frozen and refused to go anywhere. His words had taken me by surprise, even if they weren’t altogether unexpected. “Yes.” I managed to squeal out before my body was overtaken by emotions. A smile broke out on my face, and two streams erupted from my eyes. Sniffing back my running nose, laughing as I tried to wipe away the tears falling. I must have looked a state, but Alexander didn’t seem to care. He swept me up into his arms, kissing my wet face and nose before landing his lips on mine.
