The former Alpha had confirmed my suspicions.
Before retiring, the Alpha had to choose the next beta of the pack. It was a matter of avoiding favouritism. Cody and Adrien usually did not get along too well, but they would have to learn to live together and work together.
So his last order was to ascend Cody as the Beta of the pack. So this would also be a small celebration for him. Although, if you asked me, Cody did not look too comfortable with the position.
