The absolute absence of light deprived him of his senses, even his hands didn't know anymore where they began. He tried opening his eyes and failed before realizing they were open. Most night skies were the darkest of greys, but this one was pure black. It was as though someone had shut off the stars and moon.

The walls closed in. He could not escape the endless, darkened wait for freedom. And even if he could, he doubted he could make it across the room as he felt paralyzed in agony by the hellish torture he had endured. He couldn't tell what day it was, or what night it was, how long he had been in this place. A day? week, or month? he couldn't tell. It felt like he had spent an infinite amount of time in this place.
