A Stale-Mate

[Rosalie’s POV]

My heart hurts, and I don’t quite understand why. Since the start, I knew this was the reason I was here—nothing more and nothing less—yet to hear it straight out of his lips again and again hurt like hell.

“It’s good that you understand,” Diego says. “Now, you should continue to rest.”

“Roger that,” I sigh, snuggling into my blanket and turning over so that my back is to him. “I was just about to do that anyway.”

I was being petty; even I knew that, and honestly, I was sure that Diego was seeing me as some bratty kid with the way I was acting.

“Then I’ll be leaving.”

Nodding, I don’t bother saying anything as I close my eyes and listen to the sound of Diego making his way out of the hut so that I’m left alone.

For the next few days, Diego doesn’t return, and the only company I have is healer Murdoch, who keeps a close eye on me. Of course, I expected the elder to stick close, but I didn’t expect Chanel to also do the same.
