The museum was virtually empty for a Wednesday morning, apart from the few lurking employees and the primary school tour group that followed the museum guide around, we were the only other people scuffing up the polished floors.
“According to my research, the moonstone was displayed here,” Jasper announced as he led us into a room filled with gemstones on display. “It was the centrepiece at the event.” We lingered around the room looking for nothing in particular.
“Where do we even start?” I blew out a frustrated breath, nothing in this place looked like it held any traces of something that happened twenty years ago.
The large display case that stood front and centre was empty which made Jasper’s inspection look completely out
AMIDST THE SHADOWS OF NATURE, AT THE CENTRE OF THE LOTUS, LIES THE LIGHT OF THE SEEKER Did the clue refer to the Moonstone? The Curator did say the stone was luminous. “Do you think it will be that easy? We find this lotus in the shadows of nature and there’s the Moonstone?” I frowned, looking at the tiny board we took from the museum, clearly, no one would miss it if they never found it before. “Something tells me it isn’t going to be that straightforward. Whoever stole the stone clearly went through a lot to make sure it remains lost in time, but to leave clues behind? They definitely want someone to come to find it.” Jasper answered from his seat beside me on the train. FLOWER, EXISTS THE LIGHT OF THE SEEKER. The words echoed in my head aimlessly, I had no idea what a lotus flower even looked like nor what the shadows of nature entailed. “If you think any harder your hair might catch fire.” Jasper’s teasing voice sounded behind me as he stepped onto the tiny balcony. Our chos
“Well, we’re here now, where do we start?” Jasper propped his hands on his waist, looking around the vast library with a mixture of awe and distaste. Libraries weren’t a place he enjoyed frequenting and yet here he stood in the biggest library in the world. “Come on.” I grasped his hand and pulled him in the direction I knew the werewolf mysteries were hidden. “How is it you know your way around this place? As far as I know, art is more your forte?” Jasper raised an eyebrow when I began looking through the shelves for anything that might catch my eye. “My mum liked this place, we would come up here pretty often when I was a kid.” I explained, scanning titles as I went along. “Okay… Are you looking for something particular?” He shrugged, coming to stand beside me with a lost look on his face when he looked at all the books. Running my fingers over the spine, I stopped on a gold embossed title on a red leather hardcover. “This one.” I slipped the book from its place and brought it
The Temple of Lang Dui was just over thirty kilometres from the closest village. The village itself was started by the Shen clan who settled there to become caretakers of the temples and its grounds after the monks helped heal their young daughter from a mysterious ailment. Out of respect for the temple grounds, no vehicles were allowed passed the village and anyone who wished to visit would have to travel on foot through the dense forest. “They weren’t kidding when they said it’s amidst the shadows of nature.” I joked, pushing a tall fern out of my path. “Right? What kind of Temple of Wolves exists in a place where you can’t even see the moon?” Jasper frowned up at the canopy of trees so dense we could hardly make out the thousands of stars in the sky let alone see the moonlight. “I don’t know, I have a good feeling about this place,” I remarked, the land we were on was devoid of any civilisation, but that’s what made it all the better, I could practically feel the energy coursing
The hair on my arms stood to attention and the closer we got to the temple, the more the blood in my body buzzed with excitement. Selene was prancing in my mind and I found it hard to fight back the smile growing on my face as my emotions bubbled over. “Do you feel that?” I chirped and Jasper gave me a funny look. “Feel what?” He asked slowly, looking at me with surprise when I all but hopped on my feet when the temple came into view. “You can’t feel it? It’s like my body is vibrating from the power in the ground.” I shook my head to gain some focus on my surroundings. Jasper chuckled at my excitement, “Ah, I forgot you haven't visited sacred grounds before.” “What do you mean?” I looked up at him in wonder. “There was a temple on the other side of the Hightide pack lands that my mother used to take me to. She said that the deeper your connection with the Moon, the stronger you will feel the energy of the sacred grounds. She used to say the sacred grounds are covered in the sand
The sun was setting beyond the horizon when we caught sight of the Abbey sitting cross-legged in the middle of the grand hall with a scroll laid open in front of him, but what was more intriguing than the sight of him, was the single ray of sun that shone on the scroll from the decorated skylight.“The light of the seeker,” I mumbled and walked into the hall with Jasper hot on my heels.“Come, sit with me.” The Abbey motioned to us without looking our way and we quickly took a seat on either side of him.“The lotus flower symbolises purity and rebirth.” He pointed to the illuminated flower which was engraved on the wooden scroll and Jasper and I shared a look.&l
Leaving the Temple of Lang Dui was heart-rending, but as Jasper and I embarked on the third leg of our quest, we were both a little different than we’d been yesterday. The walk back to the village was silent, with neither of us willing or knowing how to bring up the events of the past twenty-four hours, we still weren’t certain where our clue would lead us, but I was certain we were headed in the right direction.“Where to from here?” Jasper asked when we sat down at a pub and grill for lunch.“I’m not quite sure yet.” I bit my lip, I hated the uncertainty, but I had to follow my gut no matter what.&l
Jasper and I left the eatery in a hurry, leaving our food half-eaten and our waiter shocked by the sudden turn of events. Jasper was keeping a ridiculous distance between us and I was yet to understand what was going on.The sudden change in his demeanour was both shocking and hurtful, but I pushed my feelings away as I studied the look of pure terror and panic on his face.“Jas, stop.” I called when we were a good few metres beyond the treeline, but he continued marching on, “Jasper!” I roared and as if I pushed a button his footsteps halted.I was about to grab his arm when his body swung around, stopping my movements, “What are you doing, I said don’t touch me!”
A figure lurking around the corner caught my eye as we passed a shop window, the same figure I’d seen at the market and previously in the airport. “We’re being followed,” I remarked casually. “I know, it’s one of Dark’s men,” Jasper replied easily and I had to hide my surprise. “You know him?” I glanced at the window again, but I had lost sight of the man clad in a white Thobe. “I’ve seen him around.” Jasper shrugged and suddenly pulled me into a crowded eatery. “Go order something, I’ll check if there’s a way out back.” I couldn’t help glancing out the window as I ordered food at the counter, the street was busy but I could see the back of the man facing me as he watched me in the reflection on a window. “Here you go, Madam.” The server handed me a paper bag with the snack I ordered and I accepted it with a fake smile before moving to the back of the eatery where I saw Jasper sitting. “The only way out is through the kitchen, I figured if we make a run for it we can make
