Chapter 18

Scarlett

My vision blurred faster than I could blink, with it a dull hammering pain behind my eyelids and forehead taking charge. One moment I could hear the alpha's gasp of disbelief, the next a loud continuous ringing filled my ears. I writhed on the bed, my chest contracting while my throat seemed to close in on me. My actions didn't feel like my own, I had no control over them. It felt as if a cyclone was stirring my thoughts and my feelings, scattering them and mixing them up at the same time.

The ache in my heart surged from a dull throb to burning, harrowing pain – faster than greased lightning and as soon as the hurt reached its apex, it was gone, dissipating into nothingness. My wolf was left letting out whimpers, still calling for her companion. I couldn't understand, Jaxon remained still, unaffected by my utterance.

'It didn't work. ' Jaxon's voice washed over me, making me snap my hazy eyes to his direction. His usual composed voice was nothing but shaky and broken.
