Making the Calls

Mikey didn’t understand why, but when he made the call, the next morning to the rehab facility, it became clear that this would be the most difficult thing he’d ever done. All because he didn’t want Heather’s hopes up to be dashed because as far as Mikey could tell there were so many possible negative end results than positive ones. What if Bill had died? Or had mentally checked out? Physically unable to function as he had. Move on with his life and someone else? Or could he have been too emotionally scarred to open himself up to them and the memory of their rejection?

Add to this that Mikey and Jay both felt personally invested in this. Their emotions ran high with how they could feel and relate to Bill.

Jay’d clung to Mikey each night they’d been here. He silently needed Mikey to remind him that their triad wasn’t in any danger of collapsing like Heather’s parents’ had.
