That was understandable. In fact, after Jake heard about the professor's death, he was certain they might come across some heavily loaded men and have a combat before they reached back to Texas. Always after such unexpected deaths, more predicaments followed. Bruises on hands and bandages around neck, shoulders and stomach were inevitable.
He was ready for it and the fact that Aria was going to be investigated for a murder she was not related with caused his composure more damage. He could easily sunder some esophagus from the stomachs of a few if at all they charged on them.
