299. Diverting Embarrassment

“I…. Ahmmm…. I,” Mavie stammered.

Ray heard his Boss ask “what?” in a grumpy tone through the earpiece, but he did not mimic the way he received the message. The assistant was torn between these two, but he could not dare voice his displeasure on the flow of events. All Ray could do was give the caregiver a helpless expression. Ray had his back to the camera, so Judas did not see the agony on his assistant’s face during the whole conversation between him and Mavie. How Ray wished they would just do it on their own. But then again, how could he refuse to obey and do as his Boss demands of him?

Mavie was also helpless. But what she heard last from the man terrified her. She summoned her courage to speak and tell him what bothered her so much.

“Can I go out for a while to buy something?”

Mavie found a way to divert the embarrassment. She would rather be scolded for asking something such as permission to go out and buy what she needed than tell the man what she actually had to buy.
