Everly knew she was dreaming because Jack was smiling at her. His eyes were peering into hers, and he didn’t look angry at all. How long had it been since his face had been this close to hers? She was in the woods, the scent of pine and freshly falling leaves mingling with Jack’s cologne and that manly scent that always made her stomach tighten up, and he had her pressed up against the rough bark of a tree.
“I love you, Everly,” dream Jack said in a husky voice. “I love you so much.”“I love you, too,” she said, staring into his eyes. He leaned in and kissed her, and Everly could taste him as if he was really kissing her, as if his warm lips were really on her mouth. Then, suddenly, everything shifted, and they were wolves, running through the woods together, their paws ripping through the soil, birds circling above them, calling to one another, the tops of the trees swaying in the wind.Everly’s fur was a dar“I have to marry you?”Everly repeated what Jack had said, trying to make sure she understood. He nodded. “Yeah. Well… I guess not me. But someone. And since you’re basically out of time, and I’m the only guy around that fits the criteria, it’s probably going to be me. Unless you want to go to another pack and see if there’s another Alpha’s son or Alpha that wants to marry you. Which maybe you could find. But… that would take some time.”Everly stared at him for a moment, not daring to say the obvious alternative. She would never even consider marrying Slate anyway.“All right,” Everly said, shaking her head slightly because she still couldn’t quite wrap her head around what Jack was telling her. “Is that what this marking ceremony is that the book was talking about? Is that a wolf shifter wedding?”Jack shook his head. “No, that’s… something
Everly was aware that she was staring at Jack, that she had been staring at Jack for a long time now, probably too long, and that he was patiently waiting for her to say something. She just didn’t know what to say.He wasn’t saying anything either, which she kind of resented. She wanted him to be the first to speak after the bomb he’d just dropped on her. Wasn’t he supposed to ask her something like, “Everly? Are you okay?” or say, “Everly, speak to me!” Instead, he just sat there, waiting for her to process it and be able to talk—or at least breathe.“Uh… wh-what?” she stammered.“Yeah,” he said. “The marking ceremony happens during sex. That’s why the book wants you to be eighteen, I’m assuming. So that you’re an adult, or whatever.”Everly shook her head, and the ability to think and speak came flooding back to her. “But wasn’t th
After Jack and the others left, Everly had a little while to think about everything that had happened before her father got home from work. Jack had volunteered to stay with her, but she had told him that it was okay. She needed to fix dinner, and she really needed some time to process everything. The fence was done, and it looked great. She’d gone outside to take a tour of it before everyone had left. Not there was a lot to see, but Jack wanted to show her how to open the gate. The handle had to be lifted and then swung open. That way, Toby couldn’t just push it open. It looked like it would hold him in. As long as he didn’t dig his way out. She didn’t think she’d be taking his eyes off of him when he was outside anyway.Since the fence was done, Jack didn’t really have any reason to come back the next day, but he said he’d come back anyway. She was glad—she wanted to see him.At the same time, Everly was nervous. She d
Everly was up early the next morning, even though she didn’t have to be. She would’ve liked to have been one of those teens who could sleep in, but she had never really been one to enjoy sleeping, not when her dreams were often plagued by nightmares of her mother’s disappearance. That’s not what had her leaping out of bed around the time her father left for work that Tuesday morning, though. She wanted to take a shower before Jack got there. Everly had no idea what time he was planning on being there, but she wanted to be ready when he arrived.Once she was out of the shower, dressed, had her makeup and hair done, there wasn’t a whole lot for Everly to do except for sit around and wait. With no signal on her phone, she turned the television on, but they only got about three channels, and there was nothing on them…. It would’ve been nice to have some homework to do. She didn’t even have that.Everly sat on the couch, her
“Everything is gone.” Everly looked around the attic. All of the boxes of her mother’s stuff, as well as everything else, was gone. “Where in the world would my dad have taken it?”Jack stood behind her, quiet, for a few moments before he said, “Probably that shed he mentioned the other day, the one on the edge of the forest.”Everly turned to look at him. “Do you think he’d take her camera out there? What if something happened to it?”Jack shrugged. “He didn’t want you looking at that stuff, right? Where else would he put it? If it’s not up here, there’s not a lot of other places to put it. I mean, we could check in his closet, but if it’s not in there, it has to be in the shed.”Everly let out a long sigh. There was no way in the world she was going out to that shed, not by herself. “I don’t even know where the key is.”“I do,” he s
The walk to the shed didn’t take too long. It wasn’t all that far from the back yard. But it was strange, walking with Jack in his wolf form. Everly didn’t like that she couldn’t speak to him. She also didn’t like that she had no idea where the other wolves were, especially the Nachtwolves. She knew that Jack could communicate with his own pack mates in his wolf form and that he’d find a way to let her know if she was in danger, but it still made her uneasy. They reached the shed in about fifteen minutes. She pulled the key out of her pocket and unlocked the padlock on the shed, pulling the door open. Walking inside, she tried not to sneeze from the dust and musty smell. It was dark in there as well. A few windows on one side or the other did little good with the big tree branches hanging down over either side of the shed.“How are we supposed to see anything in here?” Everly muttered walking inside. There wasn’t any el
“Get on your back?”Everly could hardly believe what she was hearing. Jack actually wanted her to crawl up on his back. “Are you serious, Jack?” she asked him.“Yeah, and we don’t have a lot of time, so I’m going to give you my jeans. Bring them with you, please. And hold on tight because I’m going to be running pretty fast.”Everly didn’t even know what to think. Before she could get another question out, Jack had his pants off and was shifting. Everly’s eyes were on the forest around them as she tried to listen to hear if anything was approaching. Would the Nachtwolves Jack’s pack had warned him about come flying through the trees soon? Could Jack outrun them?He was in his wolf form now and crouching down for her to climb on. He made an impatient grunting noise in the back of his throat.“Okay, okay,” she mumbled. “I’m going.” She had no idea how to mount
By Thursday, Jack was about ready to come out of his skin, he was so tense about Saturday night. He’d spent Wednesday with Everly, at her house, trying not to carry her into her bedroom, toss her down on her bed, and have his way with her, and it proved to be very difficult. They’d stayed in the living room, mostly watching movies and talking about when they were younger. She’d fallen asleep on his lap, and he’d spent hours just smoothing her hair and rubbing little circles on the back of her hand and her arm.But Thursday, she showed up with her dad around 11:00, bringing pie and rolls, as his mother had said they should, since Jim didn’t want to come emptyhanded, and she looked beautiful in a long blue dress he’d never seen her in before. Jim had on jeans and a brown turtleneck sweater and looked completely uncomfortable.Greta met them at the door. “Oh, this pie smells delicious,” she said, taking the apple pie from Everly
