Thoroughly spent, Emma fell back on the mattress. Beside her, Jamie was recuperating, breathing heavily. A warm smile touched her face as she watched him, and the sudden urge to cuddle with him emerged within her. So that’s what she did.
As she moved closer to him, sensing her presence, his arm quickly came around her shoulder. Resting her head against the bump of shoulder, she sighed. She realized only then that it was the first time in the recent past that she felt so at peace. Nothing was on her mind, not her parents, her uncle and aunt or the threat to her life. Just spending a few hours with him transported her into a space she struggled to fit in before, one where she was content.
She hadn’t realized when the thought made her smile.
