-Cain-“Where are they?” I yelled, throwing my fist against the rogue’s face and seeing his head fly to the side before whipping back and continuing his cruel laughter. “Where?”I hit him again and again, his head always whipping back, ready to receive more. It didn’t matter I had beaten him beyond recognition. He kept laughing, and it annoyed me greatly. I was about to hit him again when Bran came up behind me, grabbing my shoulder. I turned around and saw him shake his head.“You can’t mean I should stop,” I panted.“Stop,” was all he said.I turned to the rogue, who could barely see out of one eye. We had him tied up and drugged with wolfsbane so he couldn’t change, yet I could see that almost happiness in his eyes at hearing Bran ordering me to step back.“This isn’t over,” I promised him before I took a few steps back, turning and then following Bran out of the dark room.I closed the metal door, and then I saw the dark look on his face.“I can get the answer from him. I can find
-Willow-I sipped that awful tea again, feeling less inclined to drink it, but I couldn’t get my mother’s words out of my head. I knew Cain just didn’t want to lose me, but I wondered how he would really react if I either lost the pup or if it came out to be a girl. My nervousness was killing me, and I was starting to feel a slight turn in my stomach as if I should throw up, but nothing was coming up through my throat yet. The tea wasn’t making it easier. Though the powder had no taste, it still felt like drinking acid because I knew something was in the tea that was trying to alter my body. It didn’t feel good, and it took me ages to drink it this time. When I was done, I went to find Cain and Henry, who were both working in the office. I had taken a small break from the work to go drink the tea, and when I came back, they were almost arguing, which surprised me since they never seemed to argue. I looked confused between them, but they didn’t even notice me.“What is going on?” I ask
-Cain-When it grew late, I sat alone in the office working on the proposal to the council about offering fighters from all their packs. I hoped they liked the idea, however, as I was working on the speech, someone knocked on my office door.“Enter,” I told them, but I was surprised when I saw Eva entering. “Eva? You’re still here?”“We need to talk.”“Us?” I asked in disbelief, hearing her chuckle a little as she closed the door behind her and came up to my left side.“Yes, I know, it sounds crazy, but it’s regarding Willow.”“Oh?” Now I was intrigued. Anything regarding Willow was important to me. However, when Eva threw a small plastic bag down in front of me, I didn’t know how to react because I didn’t know why she had done it. I picked it up, opened it, and sniffed the powder, but it was odorless. “What is this?”“Your mate has been ingesting that for almost two weeks now,” she told me.“WHAT?” I exclaimed, standing up and holding out the bag to Eva. “What the fuck is this?”“I d
-Cain- I was tapping my foot against the white, smooth floor as my family’s pack doctor, Paxton, was putting the powder through testing. I watched the machine work while he typed away on the computer. He was a fucking genius, so I knew he was the right one to ask, and he had a horrible work addiction, so he never slept either. It didn’t matter; I had come late at night asking him to examine that powder. He was more than up for the challenge. “Where did you say you got this?” he asked. “My mate…” “What?” he asked, turning to me. "She... her mother gave it to her, telling her that it could somehow ensure she and I had a boy,” I explained. “And she really wants a boy?” “My mate or her mother?” “Your mate,” he said. I shrugged. “I don’t think it’s actually that important to her, but her mother and everyone else are pressuring her into thinking it is.” “I see,” he said, nodding a little as he understood the world we came from. He had, after all, been keeping this pack treated and
-Cain-I stepped into a completely dark bedroom. When I came home, I was unsure if Willow had gone to sleep in another one. I wouldn’t be surprised if she did, but I would still bring her back. I couldn’t sleep without her, and I knew she felt the same since we were mates, but I wouldn’t blame her for trying. However, as I entered our bedroom, I saw her curled up on the bed, the sheets all the way up to her chin. The bedroom was so dark, I could have been fooled, but the way the clump shifted a little told me Willow was over there. I slowly closed the door, then walked over to where the night lamp was on my side of the bed. I turned it on, seeing the clump curl together even more as if trying to shield herself. I hated Willow was almost scared of me, and I was unsure how to really solve this. I wanted to say something, but I had no words. After standing for a few seconds beside the bed, I grabbed the pillow from my side, then went over to the couch. I believed it was better if we both
-Cain- I watched as Willow walked into our bedroom, only to go to the bed and slip underneath the covers again, hiding from the world. I sighed. I had hoped I had made her feel better, but clearly this was going to take some more work. I walked over to the clump on the bed and sat down. I reached out, touching what I believed was her hip, and stroked it. “I thought we had already cleared everything up. You’re not a bad mother, Willow,” I told her. “We cleared everything up,” she confirmed, yet her voice was low and without feeling. “Then why are you hiding?” “Because it’s better under here.” Her words worried me. I didn’t want her to think hiding away was better. I slipped off my jacket and shirt before I moved underneath the covers to find Willow there. I grabbed her and brought her to me, and we both sighed when our bodies were pressed together. “It’s not better under here,” I told her. “It’s nice, but not better.” “I like it here." “No, you’re spiraling into a dark hole, an
-Cain- I waited for Willow to get ready for the dinner. She was taking quite some time, and so I looked at my phone, seeing the many posts about the upcoming dinner and all the people who were coming. It was going to be quite a grand event, but it always was. I had simply refused to attend, and when I had attended, I was usually already drunk by the time the dinner arrived. I had never cared much about them, but I knew tonight I would have to prove myself. My every move was being weighed and considered. I had to show them all why I was a good choice as king. It was almost strange to think I was now fighting for this position when I had never cared about it before. All thanks to our mate, my wolf said happily. “Yeah, she is pretty wonderful,” I whispered. “Cain?” I heard her call. “Need something?” “I can’t zip my dress,” she complained, making me smile. “I wanted to do it myself to surprise you, but I can’t get it all the way.” I put away my phone, then walked into the closet, o
-Willow- The dinner went rather smoothly, or as smoothly as it probably could go. I did notice many were intrigued by Cain’s attentive behavior. If he thought I hadn’t eaten enough, he would encourage me to eat more, and he would take every opportunity he could get to touch me or kiss me. No one had seen that side of him, and I believed it was working well in his favor. Cain was probably not thinking about how it showed him in a better light when he was being attentive, but I noticed the way people whispered and pointed. They were impressed. Once dessert arrived, I noticed Cain’s hand had come to rest dangerously high on my thigh. My dress was long, so he couldn’t touch me or slip his hand underneath, but I felt the promise in his touch. He was getting impatient to have me again, and it warmed my body knowing that. “Cain, dessert,” I pointed out when he would rather stare at me than taste the delicious ice cream and red velvet cake in front of us. Cain leaned closer to me as I scoo
