chapter 26

Demetrio swallowed hard, peeked through the door and stepped in behind Eva.

The children stood in a row, side by side.

He looked at each of them, his heart beating a thousand times an hour. Not knowing what to say or ask, it was Fernanda who approached him.

Demetrio bent down to greet her. She was a beautiful girl, her face as fine as his.

The girl placed her hand on his cheek and said in a whisper:

"I knew you were my daddy," she whispered tearfully. Demetrio took the girl in his arms and held her tightly as he thanked God for his children.

Andrea and Fernando stood and stared at Demetrio. They had seen him at home a few days before, but did not know he was their father.

When Eva saw that the children were not moving, she pushed them a little to the back and made them walk over to Demetrio, who, seeing them, held out his hand to them to come closer.

"Daddy," the boys said.

Demetrio felt as if his heart would burst out of his chest at that moment; he never in his life thought he would
