Chapter 24

Sam fell asleep after so much crying. She woke up later than usual and her reflection in the mirror was frightening, at least she could cover it with her veil. She dreaded going out and seeing Arthur, but at the same time, she wanted to hold him in front of her, hug him and explain why she ran away from her husband.

She walked out crestfallen and went into the kitchen. She felt instantly judged and ashamed, even though no one knew what had happened. She sat down shyly, worried eyes piercing her.

“Are you all right?” Jacqueline accosted her. “You look pale and your eyes are puffy. Tell me if I should go and tell Arthur off. Did you fight? He was out very early in a foul mood.”

Sam cleared her throat because her speech was slurred.

“No, he didn't do anything to me,” she tried not to cry, despite the stinging in her eyes. She felt terrible as she didn't know how to make things right between them. It hurt her to hurt him, i
