Chapter 33

I had to smother a giggle at his indignant tone. It was painfully obvious that they thought I was just going to surrender and ask them to kill me like a meek little kitten. An uncomfortable thought hit me that a short time ago I might have. Not anymore! I swore to myself. I left the still cussing men at the front and slowly made my way around to the back door.

As I hid in the bushes, I cursed the fact that there was no window available before the stairs. I desperately wished I could see if anyone were in the kitchen or was coming towards the back door. But, soon enough, I heard the heavy thud of boots stepping out on the porch, and with bated breath, I waited for the telltale crunch that meant the man had stepped onto the pathway. That heart-pounding sound almost came too soon, but I took the opportunity that was given to me and jumped out swinging the branch down to catch the man's forearm.
