Chapter 55

I craned my neck to see out the window to find out who was going to come in the front door first. I noted the shattered glass from the door and realized that was what I had been picking out of myself.

A tuft of brown hair bobbing behind the bushes caught my eye. It wasn't a head I recognized, and in a heartbeat, I knew that my time of rest had come to an end. I was almost positive that even if I pulled the glass out, I wasn't going to be able to walk. However, I knew if I didn't, I wasn't going to be able to walk for sure. So, in a split second, I made a decision that under normal circumstances I never would have made.

I whipped my shirt off, knowing that my blood, as horrifying as that thought was, made the thing too slippery to hold onto, then grasped the impaling shard as firmly as I could. Taking several deep breaths, I yanked it out so fast that I practically flung it across the room once it pulled free.
