"You want to adopt them?" she asked, to be sure she'd heard well.

"Yes," he nodded. "That's what I said. But I'm gonna need a consent from the real father or at least some confirmation he no longer wants to be in the picture anymore before I can actually take ownership of them. "

"A consent? I can attest to the fact he no longer wants them," she said, her mind going over several things. She had to be careful so he wouldn't realize anything was amiss. Since she'd decided to lie, she had to lie till the end. "I just have no way of accessing him whatsoever."

He sighed. "You don't understand. Just tell me who he is. I'll have someone trace him down. It's that simple."

She sat opposite him, trying to keep her wits about her. She had a plan. If he was ready to adopt the children, then that meant they were as good as his. He was as good as knowing for real he was their father. But each time she tried to tell him the truth, something he said always held her back. What she'd done
