The Lullaby of Wolves

The meditation room was as tall as it was wide and fairly dark within. They impeded what little light that got into the room with a blackout curtain and only a single candle on a small shrine was lit. The air was thick with incense sticks that burned on the shrine.

Rem did not move to hint that he had heard me enter. In fact, Rem seemed strangely still and quiet and not at all in any danger. Yet the aching of my body wouldn’t wane and everything within me told me I was needed here.

Slowly, I dragged myself over to where Rem kneeled in front of the shrine. The action brought me pain with each step but I continued until I was at Rem’s side. His breathing was shallow. Had I known no better, I’d have thought him to be asleep and nothing more.
