I escaped upstairs, throwing myself into the shower so maybe, just maybe, it would hide my loud cries. I watched to wash my grief away, feeling so damn guilty when I shouldn’t have!

Russo betrayed us, he earned not trust, but what if he was right?

What if those wizards, including that small child I bonded with, was stuck under Juden’s terror? I know it’s like to be Juden’s whipping post. I couldn’t picture him doing that to Penelope.

“Helen, come here,” Justin whispered, pulling the shower curtain aside. His bare arms slung around my hips and I sobbed, already soaking wet, against his chest. “I know, mate. It’s upsetting.”

“What if he’s telling the truth?”

Justin hummed a noise, kissing my neck. “I can’t be sure if he is. That’s the problem. For now, I want you to decide what to do.”

I stepped back, the hot shower pouring down my naked frame. “Wh—What?”

He nodded, sure of himself. “You were the one that went through the week with Scott and his treatment of you,” he choked. “
