Mitchell was concerned with his situation. He had struggled to get the door where he wanted it because his chest hurt with every move he made. His vision was limited to a small area with his right eye. His left eye was swollen completely shut. His back ached and his ass hurt. Running his hands over his backside, he discovered a piece of metal embedded in his upper leg, near his butt. He briefly attempted to remove it, but the pain that created was more than he cared to endure. It occurred to him that pulling the metal from his body could cause him to bleed a great deal. It didn't appear to be bleeding at all now. That surprised Mitchell until he concluded that it must have been so hot that it cauterized his flesh as it entered, thus preventing serious bleeding. It was snowing extremely hard, and the wind was beginning to whip the flakes around in all directions. For the first time, Mitchell realized that it was also very cold. He would need shelter and heat before long or he'd peris
They were not looking for a body. They searched likely areas where a man in distress would look for shelter during a storm. They looked for caves in the hillside, smoke in the air, tracks in the snow, and deadfalls where downed trees could offer some protection from the elements. By Friday afternoon, they were tired and discouraged, but in agreement that they would not end their search until they found Mitchell. Neither brother wanted to return home from this mission they had undertaken empty handed. It was far easier to face the weather than the women waiting for and depending on them. The storm had finally dissipated, and the sun was breaking out when Jason suddenly stopped in his tracks. He sniffed the air and then called to his brother."I smell smoke. The wind is coming from the east, so let's head that way, and hurry."So it was that the Hunter brothers came upon Mitchell's little cavern in the rocks. They feared he was dead when they first crawled into the shelter. The fire
"You should tell them that Brad and Jason Hunter--two of West Point's finest--went into the mountains in a raging storm, searched tirelessly for three days in arctic like conditions and found Mitchell, then brought him back to the hospital," responded Christine. "Please don't mention that he's in pretty bad shape and we're really worried about him. We want to emphasize the positive right now. Thanks, Nell, for being a real friend and a great reporter."Nell left the room to file a report as the rest settled in to wait. After about an hour, Jason and Brad entered the room. They were clean shaven and showered after their most recent excursion."We just had to get cleaned up. Wearing the same clothes, you've sweated in for three days is no way to greet ladies," offered Brad as he hugged Nell O'Leary while Maddie found herself in Jason's strong arms."You know how much I appreciate what you guys did for Mitchell, which means you did it for me as well," began Christine. "What can you te
Maddie looked to Christine in surprise and quickly stood and followed Laura out of the room. Christine felt everyone in the room look at her as she struggled to determine the meaning in this turn of events. Unable to reach a logical conclusion, she decided to simply keep her faith in Mitchell and wait."Mitchell, it's my fault that you've been hurt so bad," cried Maddie as she neared the bed and saw Mitchell's bandaged face."That's why I wanted to see you, Maddie," croaked Mitchell. "I need you to help me get well. Will you do that for me?""Of course, Mitchell. What can I do to help?" Maddie asked."I'm trying to get that bastard out of my head. He tried to take something from us, and I'm worried that he may have succeeded. I heard Jason and Brad talking on the chopper ride back. They didn't know I was conscious. I heard that you're wracked with guilt and now I see it's true."Maddie, you know that I love you, but I doubt that you know how much. We'll never be lovers, but that
Maddie walked up to Brad and wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him long and hard on the lips. Once she released Brad, she moved over to Jason. He was ready for her and pulled her tight to his chest and leaned down to meet her lips with his. They held that position until Hailey started yelling for them to get a room.Melissa and her mother were laughing at Maddie's forward behavior. Nell had moved into her fiancé's arms, while Christine moved behind Maddie with a smile on her face."I owe these guys some thanks, too. Let go of that big lug so I can express myself properly," insisted Christine."No, Christine. That's why Mitchell asked me to thank these guys. He didn't want his girlfriend whisked away by some handsome, rugged Ranger. I'm the sacrificial lamb here. It's a dirty job, but it's mine to do.""Just get out of the way," laughed Christine as she moved close to Jason and kissed him soundly on the lips. "You saved my guy, Jason. You'll always be a brother to me, and
Mitchell responded to the antibiotics quickly and was out of intensive care by Sunday. His face was still swollen, but he had complete vision in his right eye and his left eye was beginning to open. His pneumonia was improving rapidly. The cracked ribs were extremely tender, making any extension of his arms or sudden movement painful.Melissa was not surprised that Christine insisted that Mitchell stay with them again. Christine and Hailey spent Saturday switching rooms. Christine intended to stay with Mitchell and neither Dan nor Melissa voiced an objection. After school on the following Wednesday, Christine and Ashley drove to the hospital to pick up Mitchell. Once again, Mitchell was wheeled down the hall with staff wishing him well and joking that he tries to stay away a little longer this time.Mitchell's arrival at the Leonard home was a festive occasion. Christine's grandparents, along with Maddie, Willow were waiting for him in the living room when Dan and Melissa once again
"Mitchell hasn't seen the video where he sang to Christine at JC Penney that Saturday. Let's make some popcorn and watch it with him," suggested Hailey as she gently tugged Mitchell toward the couch. "He may be the only person in the entire country that hasn't seen it."Mitchell was surprised at how well his song turned out. Christine looked stunning as she sat next to him at the piano. Her surprise at his song selection caused him to smile as he watched."That's the way to romance a girl," declared Christine's grandmother after the song finished. "Sing her a love song on live television with who knows how many people watching. I was all choked up that morning when I watched it on TV.""Dinner will be ready in an hour and a half, Mitchell. Would you like to lie down for a while? You look a little drowsy," commented Melissa."Good idea, Mom. Come on, Mitchell. I'll help you get situated. I forget what you've been through, at least until I look at your face. Let's get you in bed so
Christine and Mitchell were up early the next morning. Christine was going to attend school while Mitchell planned to take the rest of the week off to recuperate. He expected to return the following Monday. He hoped that his face would be back to normal by then.As she gently washed his back, Mitchell heard Christine begin to sob. He turned and asked, "What's wrong, Christine? Why the tears?""Seeing these awful bruises makes me realize how bad your ordeal must have been. Look at these Marks, and these stitches in your cute little butt. I don't know how you managed to stay alive and come back to me, but I'm so glad that you did. Have I mentioned that I love you a lot?" Mitchell asked."You have. Then add the fact that you're standing naked in the shower with me makes me realize how much you love me. You're extremely beautiful and I couldn't possibly love you any more than I do," Christine said."That's sweet, but you may love me even more after you start feeling better and I let y
