As if the threatening text wasn’t enough. I got another call from Ben. I was skeptical about answering at first because I didn’t fancy picking up calls from unknown numbers.

“Vanessa.” I heard his familiar voice over the line. No other person ever called me Vanessa except my dad, when I was little and I had done something wrong. “I can see you didn’t listen to what I told you earlier. You’re still at that man’s house.” He spoke again because I was quiet when he called my name.

“What the fuck do you want from me?” The irritation in my voice was evident. I wanted to hang up but I still wanted to hear what he had to say.

“I’m in prison because of you. And you think you can just move on with your life, with another man.” Was he being serious? In prison because of me?

“You must be out of your mind.”

“You left our son to be with that man. I’ll be out soon and our family will be back together. You better leave that man before I do something bad to you.”
