Chapter Sixty Four

"Code 10–45. We need an ambulance. Thirty five, Simpson Street, Block six. Code 10–45. I repeat, we need an ambulance. A man is down with two bullets to his chest."

It was all happening in slow motion. It had all happened in slow motion. His fingers pulling the trigger. The bullets traveling into his chest, the scampering from Sam to get in front of her, her deafening screams, the sound of the gun dropping to the ground, and the fulfilled laugh that followed afterwards.

Tinnitus. The buzzing noise in one or both ears. That was it. It was tinnitus — the ringing noise in her ears which blocked out the other sounds. It was the third time it's happened to her. Her ears were ringing. All the tears in her eyes had dried up, her jaw had dropped to the floor and so had her shoulders. She was numb. She suddenly felt numb. The touch lights flashed on her face which had gone pale white like all the blood had dried up. She was as cold as a corpse. She was as still as a log. She was overco
