Chapter 11
Katie leaned back in her chair, trying to get comfortable. At almost 6 feet tall, she wasn't built for the furniture. Being a small village, everyone attended the same school from primary all the way up to age eighteen, at which point most of them, Katie included, had an insane growth spurt. The official school curriculum, consisting of everything the human world covered, had officially ended. However, there were a few more things for the teens to learn before being sent out into the world.  "In humans, the hormone oxytocin enforces building relationships, social bonding as well as supporting childbearing and breastfeeding. We have substantially elevated amounts of this hormone, and this is the reason our society is so tight-knit and close." The teacher took a deep breath. "Now, oxytocin is released during a sexual encounter—" Some of the boys whooped and cheered at the word sexual. 'H

Chapter 12
Princess Angelica Preston walked ahead of her assistants, listening to the clicking of the suitcase wheels as her girls dragged the cumbersome load down the tunnel of steel of glass toward the airport. The cold sun shone through the glass, glinting in her eyes. She pulled her Armani sunglasses from her coat pocket. Such an odd combination—a winter coat and sunglasses—but she was familiar with this Country and its peculiar weather. "Our guide should be waiting outside with a navy-blue sign," she informed them for the third time, with the expectance they would seek him out and do the talking. Talking to the common people in her place was their job after all. "Oh that has got to be him," the blonde girl said to the brunette, pointing down at the crowd below.  The tone in her voice prompted Angelica to look out of sheer curiosity. One man stood out among the others like a tall and ragged

Chapter 13
Katie ran to the school building so fast she almost skidded right into the hotdog food truck. Catching herself, she turned and breathed deeply, scanning the air for his scent.  "This way," she shouted to Haley, who was only a few steps behind. The world became a blur again as she started to run, the rasp of her breathing and clatter of her footstep being the only sounds. As she slowed, another noise grew in the distance—the cheers and shouts of fight spectators. "Kill him!" one shouted.  Katie pushed her way through the wall of bodies, ready and prepared to jump in—to use herself as a shield to save her love. She stared down at the ground, frowning in confusion. "Jason," she whispered to herself, standing limp as Haley caught up, clinging to her form to steady herself. "What the heck?" Haley muttered.

Chapter 14
Angelica stood at the desk, staring blankly through the woman who repeated her question with a smile.  "How can I help you?"  The woman's thick red perma-smile faltered as Angelica turned away without buying a ticket.  "I can't return without him," she mumbled.  As the line of people pushed past her, Angelica was forced away from the ticket desk. That level of rudeness would bother her at any other time, but today it passed by unnoticed. What was she going to do? 'What can I do?' she thought. 'I don't know what to do.' She stared at the two girls whose names she'd never bothered to learn. Both of their small, pretty faces twisted in fear and confusion.  "What do we do?" she asked, looking at each of them in turn. Both had their hair cut into bobs of the same length—the same as all

Chapter 15
Haley squeezed in next to Katie at the windowsill, trying to get a view of the exchange between Theon and the new guy. She was shocked to see he was only taking a battering of the verbal kind, then surprised further when a group of females appeared. The girls materialised from the bushes like a team of phantoms. The tallest and most highly decorated of them stepped forward to talk to Theon.  "I want to hear what's going on," Katie whined. Her fingers grasped the window frame little white spots appeared on her knuckles. "Let's sneak outside," Haley suggested. "If we slip out the open back door, they might not hear us." "Right." Katie nodded. "Oh, wait." She grabbed her hand, pulling her back to the window. "I think they are coming inside." Haley nodded in agreement as she watched the women follow Theon and Devlin toward the house. She jumped out of the wi

Chapter 16
"Are you sure about this?" Haley asked her for the seventeenth time—not that she was counting or anything.  With an exaggerated eye roll, she nodded, grabbing her friend by the shoulders. "I'm sure everything will be fine. I'll be linked up with Theon the entire time." "But spying on one of the most powerful vampires in the world? Will Theon's powers really protect you enough to keep your plan secret?" Katie frowned. "I don't think he'd send me in there if there was a huge risk of me dying." At least... she hoped that was true. "I'm scared for you." Haley's eyes filled with tears. "If I was prettier, I'd go with you." "Don't say that!" Katie cried. "You are pretty! Besides, I want you here safe. This is my mission, well, that's how I'm choosing to think about it. I'm on a secret mission to save our species from slavery." It mad

Chapter 17
After arriving and waiting in Angelica's quarters for a day and a half alone, Jen finally joined her. "It's done," Jen informed her. "The new deal has been negotiated." Katie exhaled as she nodded, expelling a tensive lungful of breath she hadn't noticed she was holding. After following the quiet girl to the town centre, she waited patiently in the town meeting hall for the princess to gather the other omegas to join her. Some of them cried while others remained outwardly strong, but they all huddled together in a cluster of shared terror and mistrust. These people had been pulled from their lives and forced to make the ultimate sacrifice.  'And this has been happening for years,' Katie thought, filled with a sudden burst of pride that she and her kin were about to end this evil tradition.  Unable to comfort the others, she had no choice but to imitate the

Chapter 18
Haley felt sick with worry as she pulled up outside Theon's house. The plans she'd made with Jade seemed insignificant with everything that was going on, but she had promised to help Jade move her belongings in. "Hey." Jade ran outside, her bare feet slapping the pavement. "How did it go? Is everything okay?" Haley nodded. "So far so good. She wasn't allowed to take her phone and Theon is a slow replier, as you'll soon find out, I'm sure." "Oh." Jade shifted, tucking her hair that kept blowing into her face. "He doesn't have much to say to me, so..." "Have you guys... you know?" Haley made a gesture with her fingers that caused Jade to screw up her face.  "Not yet. He's been busy," Jade said. "I think he wants to take things slowly, which is just... not what I expected at all." The wind picked up and whipped at the girls’ clothing and hair, forcing

Chapter 19
Angelica waited by the gates of the graveyard. The black cast iron that curled and formed wing-like patterns was cold against her back. A chill worked its way up her spine—a feeling she was not accustomed to, being a warm-blooded creature of such elegant design.  As she looked around, she saw no one visiting the tombstones to tidy the dying flowers or tend to the grass. The dark church windows seemed to watch her, but nobody occupied this building—at least, the boarded-up door would suggest as much. It struck Angelica as a rather cliche choice to use as a meeting point with a vampire—an abandoned graveyard. They might as well have asked her to join them in a Transylvanian castle. The smell of their arrival hit her nose just before she heard them rustling through the thick blanket of leaves. Her smile was joyous and automatic as she realised they had kept their word. Harley was with them. She would

Chapter 20
'This is it,' Katie thought. 'This is how I die.' As she waited for his teeth to puncture the flesh of her neck, a cold hand pushed her aside. It was gentle yet firm, moving her all the way from the bed to the floor. "Adam, dear sweet Adam, this girl is a rare treat," the newcomer cooed. "You don't devour a delectable treat such as this one in a single bite." When Katie dared to look up, she thought she must be seeing things or dreaming.  "Devlin." 'It's all just a dream,' she thought, chuckling to herself. She stared up at her rescuer, seeing now that it wasn't Devlin, just a look-a-like. 'Is he assuming Devlin's form like Adam did? The longer she stared at him, the more differences she saw. The poor lighting and terror-addled senses were to blame for this case of mistaken identity.
