Duty calls

My phone vibrates beside me. Vibrating a couple of times, until it eventually stops.

I mentally roll my eyes and turn to my side, getting comfortable again. Minutes had passed and my phone hadn't rung. I sigh constantly knowing I have more time to sleep. Just as I was about to drift off into a deep slumber, for the second time, I heard it again.

The vibration of my phone behind me. I reach out my hand to grab it, answering it in the process.

"What?" I said annoyed. Believe me that was an understatement. Who the hell calls at,

7 am

My eyes widen as I look at the clock that sat on my nightstand.

"What do you mean''What"? Have you seen what time it is? Get your ass down to the pack house NOW." Adam says through the phone. His voice sounding more desperate for help than what I think he intended it to sound. I heard people in the background, kids. I couldn't quite make out what they were saying, there were too many of them to pick up on one specific voice.

"Get off of her!" Adam yelled. "James," he said, bringing his attention back to me "Bro, I can't do this alone. I've had to separate five seventeen year olds. They are turning my house into an orgey."

I covered the speaker part of my phone with my hand and began to laugh. I couldn't help it, Adam was always incontrol. Even in our high school years he was always on time, no homework was ever undone and he never missed class.

He was an only son, which I understood why he has no experience dealing with hormonal teens. So when little things, like this irritate him, all I can do is laugh.

"Yes Alpha" I finally say.

"Don't mock me." I can tell he was mad, but I can also tell he was feelin about half a dozen other emotions. He just didn't know which one to display. "I already know you respect me, I just need these buffoons to do it as well."

I hear a knock at my door. I sat up in my bed, until my back came in contact with my head board. "Come in" I say loud enough for the person on the other side of the door to hear.

My bedroom door slides open, allowing a middle aged woman to appear from behind it.

She had short brown hair that laid inches above her shoulders. Olive skin, brown eyes and the few freckles on her nose complementing her symmetrical face.

"Beta, good morning" she began "I'm very sorry to bother you. I just thought we had made an appointment at six-thirty?" Her comment came out sounding more like a question. She looked down at her watch then back up at me.

I smiled at her "Your no bother beta Abby, and yes we did" I scratched the back of my neck embarrassed "I lost track of time."

She chuckled, "It's ok, I will continue to wait in your office, until you're ready." She then bowed her head and left my room, closing my bedroom door behind her.

"Adam," I said, completely forgetting he was still on the phone.

"Yes, yes. I heard," he sighed "What does beta Abby want?"

I threw the blankets that covered my body to one side of the bed as I placed my feet firmly on the wooden floor of my room. "I don't know. She mentioned something about her daughter last week when she asked for a meeting."

I put my phone on speaker then placed it down on my bed.

I get up from my bed and made my way to my bathroom. I quickly start the shower striping off my boxers and throwing them to the side. Slowly I approach the warm water, letting it hit my chest, then my face, gradually emerging under it. The water runs down my head drenching my hair, and slowly down my back, relaxing my tense muscles.

Once I'm done I turn off the water and step out of the shower, draping a blue towel around my waist.

I exit the bathroom followed by a roll of warm steam. As I entered the room I was greeted by the low raspy voice of Adam, who was still talking on the phone. "So just make sure you keep that in mind, ok."

"Wait, what?" I asked confused by the conversation I had unwillingly came back into. I go to my closet and pull out a casual collar shirt and some black jeans.

"Have you not been paying attention to what I've been saying?"

"No." I say honestly, while pulling up my jeans.

Adam sighed "I said that the busses are here so we can leave. Keep in mind of the time when you talk to Abby."

"Yes, I know. I won't take long" I say as I slide on my shirt and begin to button it up. "Besides she knows what we have to do today. I doubt she will keep me long."

I exchange a few more words with him then hang up the phone, since I'm standing in front of my office door.

I take a deep breath and open the door. Abby was seated on a red letter chair in front of my desk, but when she saw me she quickly stood up "Beta."

"James, Abby. No need to be so formal. You're also a beta." I extend my hand towards her chair, gesturing her to take a seat "now please have a seat." I walk to my desk, taking my seat in front of her.

Abby was the female beta for our pack. No she's not my mate, my sister or even my mother. She was the former beta's wife. Ever time I try to explain to people what her relationship to me is, they just stare at me with a bewildering expiration. Long story short, we both are second in command to Adam, our Alpha.

Before me, her husband was the beta for our pack. Everyone believed that she would take over, since she was the betas wife. It was only natural.

Adams father on the other hand, had a different opinion on the mater. He thought that a woman of her "status" couldn't handle everything that her husband did.

Which is a load of rubbish, if you ask me. In other words he was a sexist ass.

So he appointed me, the son of a high stuse family, to take her place. My family didn't have a title in our community, we didn't come from a direct line of strong wolves, not like Abby's. We were just very infuetal, critical to our pack. With owning most of the business in our area, and some in our neighboring mortal towns Adams father thought I would be a good fit. A few months later, Adams father stepped down, making Adam alpha.

Once Adam was our active leader, he did some well needed changes. Adam knew that in order to make our community function he couldn't lead like his father. Adam held an equal respect for everyone in our community. With that mindset he began to place woman in our pack's leading council, giving them all an equal title and rank to the men around them.

Recognizing what his father did to get me where I am, he appointed Abby, to run as second in command with me, until I find my mate. Then she would step down handing my mate the title of female beta. But after four years and still no luck finding her Abby sticks around helping me in what ever she can.

At the prime age of twenty, wolves become mature enough to find their mate. I'm twenty-four now, so you can count how long i've been waiting.

It's been a while...

I've lost track on how many times I've given up on the idea of a mate. Maybe I wasn't meant to have one. I guess only fate knows how much longer I have wait.
