17. LATE NIGHT VISITOR 1
We ate dinner quietly and had a game of checkers after that. We shared a lot of jokes and laughed a lot. I felt really light-hearted during that night and even when I retired to my room, I was feeling high spirited.
When I got to my room, I thought of taking a shower before going to sleep. When I grabbed pyjamas from the closet, I heard a thought that was calling out for me from outside.
Lina, are you there? I recognised it as Ashton’s.
I was amazed that I took a second frozen in my position and then went straight to my window. I yanked it out of the way. I looked out of it and thought back.
Yeah, I’m here. Where are you?
I just got to your house and I can see you now. I’m coming in right now so close that window, he thought.
I did as he said and went back to my bed. I put the pyjamas on the pillow and sat on the edge of the bed.

I woke up to a cloud-covered day. It was a little windy but not the kind of conditions that kept you indoors for the whole day. The two people that my dad brought in with him seemed a bit shaken. I read from the female’s mind that my dad had told them about Ashton being bionic. The woman had the same hair colour as Ashton but that’s the only similarity I saw between them. I looked at the male companion that was close to her, and I felt like I was looking at Ashton’s older image. He looked exactly like him, except for the hair colour. He had the same eye colour as the boy from the picture on the website. He had that same bone structure as his son. I cried silently in the capsule for a mother that I never had. I thought of my dad teaching me how to ride a bike for the first time, with no mother watching. I thought of my dad tucking me to bed every night before he went to sleep, with no mother at his side. I thought of my dad taking me to school on my first day, with no mother kissing me goodbye or wishing me good luck. I thought of the first day when I saw the adolescent stage signs, with no mother to guide me through them.I wiped the tears from my eyes and I took control of myself. I didn’t pay much attention at first since they were still updating Ashton’s parents about Kyle Simpson. I knew most of the information that was being delivered so I took that time to practise my shield.Ashton came to sit by me on the couch. He took the liberty of holding my hand and squeezing it a bit. I knew that it was his way of saying, “Are you ok?” I smiled at him for assurance and then leaned my head on his shoulder. Eventually, everyone in the house was asleep, except me and Ashton. I was lying on my bed, waiting for time to go by until the elders’ minds were all unconscious. When that happened, Ashton gilt-ed into my room. I already had Jack’s tablet in my room so I confiscated it from the desk and brought it to the bed. Ashton joined me on the bed. After breakfast everyone else went about their businesses. My dad, Jay and Kelsey went down to the lab. Mr and Mrs McKenzie went to the living room to relax while watching TV.
