18. MEET THE PARENTS
I woke up to a cloud-covered day. It was a little windy but not the kind of conditions that kept you indoors for the whole day. I was supposed to be going to school today but due to the circumstances that we were facing, I couldn’t go.
Ashton had spent the night in our home. His own parents would be arriving later on today. Being him wasn’t so great at the moment. He had found out that he was kidnapped when he was little, had his life in danger because of Kyle Simpson. Luckily, under Dr Watson’s roof, he was safe, for now.
I took a shower and then went downstairs for some milk. I found them all up; Jay was in the kitchen making breakfast, my dad and Ashton were playing my 3-D game in the living room.
“Morning Jay”, I greeted him while opening the fridge to help myself to a glass of milk.
“Morning kid. How did you sleep?” he said with a smile.

I cried silently in the capsule for a mother that I never had. I thought of my dad teaching me how to ride a bike for the first time, with no mother watching. I thought of my dad tucking me to bed every night before he went to sleep, with no mother at his side. I thought of my dad taking me to school on my first day, with no mother kissing me goodbye or wishing me good luck. I thought of the first day when I saw the adolescent stage signs, with no mother to guide me through them.I wiped the tears from my eyes and I took control of myself. My dad got up to see who it was through Jack’s surveillance footage. We all awaited for him to tell us whether it was a dangerous intruder or not.I read from his mind that it was a female, Ashton did too.“It’s Kelsey”, Ashton said.“You’re sure it’s her?” my dad asked.“Yeah, she’s the only one that said she would come today. I didn’t pay much attention at first since they were still updating Ashton’s parents about Kyle Simpson. I knew most of the information that was being delivered so I took that time to practise my shield.Ashton came to sit by me on the couch. He took the liberty of holding my hand and squeezing it a bit. I knew that it was his way of saying, “Are you ok?” I smiled at him for assurance and then leaned my head on his shoulder. His head leaned on mine and we forgot about everything bad that was happening at that moment. We just focused on us and the time that we had. Of course, we couldn’t do or say anything because of the audience that we had. Eventually, everyone in the house was asleep, except me and Ashton. I was lying on my bed, waiting for time to go by until the elders’ minds were all unconscious. When that happened, Ashton gilt-ed into my room. I already had Jack’s tablet in my room so I confiscated it from the desk and brought it to the bed. Ashton joined me on the bed. I briskly tapped my finger on the screen and Jack came on.“Hey kids, I thought you were asleep by now”, he said.“We would be, if we weren’t onto something”, Ashton said.“What is it? After breakfast everyone else went about their businesses. My dad, Jay and Kelsey went down to the lab. Mr and Mrs McKenzie went to the living room to relax while watching TV. I found him in the attic sitting on one of the seats that the room provided. I sank into the seat next to his and relaxed in it. The attic had glass walls, the lights were off. After the communication with my dad, we offloaded the supplies we had brought. Jack gave us a quick orientation on how all the weapons worked. We got armed and battle ready.
